I want to know how

Set security password so only those can connect who know the password.
For that follow below.
Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link. http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.15.1 or http://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. If you are still not able to access router with above ip then you need to RESET it for that press RESET button for 10 seconds it is in back side of router then all settings defaults..Then you can access it with above method. . Then click on wireless->wireless security->WEP security there is code password note down it or enter new password then save setting s and restart router. then you can connect wireless with new password. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

I do not know the configuration URL for your model wireless router. Generally the configuration of the wireless router and laptop are similar for various brands of wireless routers and wireless cards.

We do not have a secure connection to our wireless

You could change and configure your router through its web interface. To access it, use http://192.168.1.1 on Internet Explorer, and enter 'admin' for the password.
  • Go to Wireless LAN Security tab.
  • Select WPA-PSK on Network Authentication.
  • Enter a password that you want for your wireless network on WPA Pre-Shared Key (minimum characters is 8).
  • Set Data Encryption to TKIP.
  • Apply settings.
You should now reconnect your wireless computers to your network and enter the WPA Pre-Shared Key.

Can I use a router with a modem connection

erm dude your modem connection doesn't go in the router. It will either not fit or fry the router.

Anyways, You should have a cord with it that can go in the computer or (Maybe dsl box if you got one, then put the other cord into the computer)
If you got a cord that goes in the computer put it to share the internet connect (right click it on the modem connection and click properties then advanced then Share my connection (XP, VISTA, WINDOWS 7 ONLY))

Unfortunetly this is a common problem with alot of wireless routers. for some reason they get locked up and don't refresh themselves and only solution is exactly what your doing until the manufacturer comes out with software that doesn't lock up every now and then
