check for low regulated voltages right before it turns off . Then replace the regulator with the weak, low voltage output. It could have something else wrong with it but you can start there.

must be the right speaker wire, sounds to easy I know but maybe your wiring is grounding out the audio to that channel.

You cannot run HDMI from any source thru the Yamaha to the TV. The V661 is 1st generation HDMI headache. Version 1.1 which basically is useless. Don't blame Yamaha, it's not their fault, it's HDMI. All manufacturer's receivers prior to 09' series use either 1.1, 1.2, or 1.2a. and they all have issues. So, here's the skinny, run your audio to your receiver via optical or digital coaxial. Then run video directly to the TV via HDMI if you wish. The problem arises when you have more sources than inputs on your TV. Depending on the size of your TV can make a big difference in how you wire it. If your TV is 50" or smaller, just use component, the human eye cannot differentiate between 720p and 1080p and that's a fact. second fact, most TV shows are broadcast in a native resolution of 720p, the only real 1080p programming is on HDNET, Discovery,National Geographic and The NFL.
What I mean by that is the camera used to take the actual picture is a 1080p camera. Major money! so, that being said, if your tv is larger than 50", and it's 1080p not 1080i yes, you can see a difference. i have the same problem. i have a rx-v661. i goto the zone 2 settings and try to change the volume and it says VOL FIX. I cannot hear anything out of zone 2. It takes the current volume that is in zone 2, but i cannot hear anything. it has been working fine for at least a year.

Connect to your HDMI out from the receiver to your television.

If you want separate volume control on a different zone you would have to have a separate gain control available, such as with your center and surround channels for example.
If that option is not available and you have only the master volume control for both zones then you could use active speakers connected to the zone 2 preouts, but being able to control the volume with your extra remote with that setup requires more equipment.

Sounds like the Zone 2 amp was set to external, see below for instructions on setting it back up.
How do I setup Zone 2 on the RX-V661 Using the internal power amp.

Setting the RX-V661 remote control to operate Zone 2
1. Using a ballpoint pen or similar object and press the Code set
button. The Transmit indicator on the remote should flash twice.
2. Using the numerical key pad on the remote and key in 9992, the
Transmit indicator should flash.

You will now need to assign the receivers internal amp for Zone 2.

1. Set the remote control selector to AMP. Selector is on side of remote.
2. Press the Set Menu Button.
3. Arrow down to Manual Setup.
4. Press the Enter button.
5. Arrow to the Sound Menu option and press Enter.
6. In the Sound Menu arrow to Speaker Set and press Enter.
7. Arrow to the EXTRA SP ASSIGN and select ZONE2. This may require using LEFT or RIGHT arrow.
8. Press the Return button to exit out and return to the Manual
Setup.

It's an A/V cable, which you can get from apple or buy aftermarket. Please see detailed link here. If you decide to find a generic plug, make sure the 1/8" miniplug has all three bands for AV.

unplug the reciever for at least 15 minutes. then replug in all of your speakers making sure there is no bare wire showing. if the reciever doesnt ower on replace the fuse inside(make sure unplugged from wall)

Just a thought, but, how do you have your TV/Monitor hooked up to the Yamaha unit? If your only connection between the receiver the and the TV/Monitor is an HDMI cable, and you are plugging your WII into the front v-aux jack using composite video, the receiver will have no way to send the video signal to the TV/Monitor. The receiver upconverts all composite video and S-video signals to component video signals. This means that if you only have an HDMI connection between the receiver and the TV/Monitor, you will also need to establish a second, component video connection between the receiver and TV/Monitor to handle the upconverted WII video signal. You will probably also need to switch your TV/Monitor to use that input when you are using the WII.

Of course, if you already knew this and have it set up that way, this answer won't help you at all!

Had the same problem- but had success when I connected the wii to my DVD player, which then HDMIs through the reciever and then HDMI to my projector.

Sounds like the "crack!" was a capacitor that got fat and blew up.

Whats wrong is a bad capacitor. This is why when you turn it on you see the display for a little while, then it start to fade away. Unless you have a wiring diagram for this unit and know how to solder, your going to have to take it in for repair. You can try to check every capacitor, but have you seen how many capacitors are in that baby!!!! I hope this help. Good luck!!

Most yamaha codes will work some of your unit functions. try 0176 or 1176. These are for a dvr3 comcast remote. You can get the whole list and manual from here
