Try doing a safe mode start and do a system restore and if that
doesn't work it could be a
HDD problem. Safe mode won't mess up your console since you have been trying to do a update. If your console won't fix the
HDD issue then you might have to get a new or used 2 1/2"
SATA HDD.
SAFE MODE:
1. Place you finger on the on/off sensor leave it their until you console turns off then take you finger off the sensor.
2. Place your finger back on the on/off sensor leave it their until you hear 2 consecutive beeps then take your finger off.
3. Once the safe mode screen comes on select the option PS3 SYSTEM RESTORE.
NOTE: A PS3 system restore will delete all data except the OS. I recommend backing up your console onto a USB flash drive if possible.
Good Luck!

You've got an overheating issue with your graphics processor, you can send that in to an Over the internet company to have repair and is around $70-$80.00. It needs what is called a reflow where they melt out the sulder joints underneath the chipset and make the connection right again. I can think of a place off hand that could do it and thats GamesaGalore.com

Playstation 3 stopped working in a middle of a
You have the infamous YLOD, aka. Yellow
Light of Death. This is the number 1 cause of pS3's dying. It is an
overheating issue linked to your CPU and GPU (the processor chips)
You will need to find a local PS3 repair shop who can repair this. Do
not try to attempt repairs seen on the internet yourself. You could
make things much worse and render the unit totally unresponsive. The
repair process takes about 3 hours.
IT CAN BE FIXED
IS THERE A DISC STUCK INSIDE?
If you have a unit that is not
backwards compatible, any non 60g or 80g then you can retrieve your
disc.
Power off the unit using the toggle
switch on the back. Hold down the 'eject' button and turn the toggle
switch back from off to on. This will run a fan test and eject your
disc. Remember, this will only work on the 20, 40g models. Not the
backwards compatible units with the 4 usb port holes and the memory
card slots.

This is the 2nd most common problem
with PS3's. This isn't a bad problem. Your laser/lens will need to be
replaced. Do you see the time clock in the top right corner going
around and around? If so, you are just having laser/lens problems. If
you do not see the time icon spinning when you insert a disc, your
PS3's Blu Ray drive controller board has gone bad and you will need
to send it to Sony and not a
3rd party technician. Certain problems
are only repairable by Sony. Good luck.

On my ps3 when turned on it says hard disc file
Your HARD DRIVE (aka: Hard Disk),
located on the left side of the unit, has crashed. You will need to
replace the HD.
When you replace your hard drive, you
will need to have the latest firmware on a
usb stick. Download the firmware from
the playstation official website onto a usb
stick. Once prompted by your system you
will need to insert the usb stick into the
PS3. Good luck..

I turn my ps3 on
Try accessing the recovery menu 'safe mode'.
Press and hold the power button until the systems shuts off. (wait 2 seconds) Press and hold the power button again until you here 3 beeps. Let go.
It should ask you to connect your controller via usb and press the PS button in the middle of your controller. There will be a menu with 6 options. Try 2-5. If this doesn't work, you will definitely need to replace your HARD DRIVE. This is a problem that I have faced before.
When you replace your hard drive, you will need to have the latest firmware on a usb stick. Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb stick. Once prompted by your system you will need to insert the usb stick into the PS3. Good luck..
You will need 2.5" Sata Hard Drive
