the chances are the laser is bust try cleaning it with cd cleaner disc and liquid if it does not work laser is done buy another dvd player much cheaper than replacing the laser unit

You can't do that without a demagnatizing coil (degausse coil). Try leaving the set unplugged for 2-3hrs and try again.

Magnetized The set is probably magnetized and needs degaussing (demagnetizing). All CRT type TV's have an internal demagnetizing circuit that is engaged when the set is first turned on after being off for the day.
If this circuit is working then you sometimes hear a "bonk" sound (about 1/2 a second long when the set is first turned on. If this circuit isn't working the set will become magnetized over time and will have to be degaussed using a degauss coil available at a TV repair shop (cost aprox. $35.00) and you should have the circuit checked at the same time. Either the tracking will be off set on the VCR or the heads may need cleaned or the pinch roller in the VCR will be worn & need replaced.There could also be a possibility the guide arms are not fully in position in the VCR.

The converter box receives hte digital signals and converts them into either channel 3 or 4, or into direct video (red,white,yel). The output of the converter box must go into the VCR input for recording to work. Before the conversion, the tuner of hte VCR would receive the RF signal the same as the TV. The tuner inside the VCR is an analog tuner not digital, so it needs the conversion too. Most converters will provide both the A/V signal (R/Wh/Y) and RF (coax connector).

Hello Ronni. I can assist you. The problem you describe can only be a problem on the power board, theres a faulty capacitor in the power supply area of your set. Check for a damaged and burned resitor,capacitor, fuse on the power supply area.

If you are into doing it yourself you now have isolated the problem. If you are going to have a tech. do this little repair now you can call around and know what you are talking about. Get at least three estimates and also consider bringing the tv into the shop which will be a lot less expensive than a house call. Good luck with it.

Always helpful to share what the year and model of the TV is. Assuming it is actually plugged into a working outlet... TV's usually stop working when something fails internally. It could be power supply related, horizontal oscillator related, high voltage related, a bad solder connection or some other component has exceeded it's lifespan. Some TV models have known well documented issues. Knowing the model number will help me research whether yours has known issues. In anycase the repair will lkely require an experienced knowledgable person or someone that is willing to take the risk exposing themselves to potentially fatal high voltage and learn how TV's work and how to test various components, trace signals, identify bad solder joints, cracks in the solder, correct signals at various test points etc... much like I did roughly 30 years ago :).

First switch off the VCR and unplug and then try the following:
1. Try this - hold the menu button down for 10 seconds. TV should power up; you will have to turn off front panel buttons on menu.

2. You can also try a hard reset: Unplug TV from AC mains and remove all cables from TV. Wait about 30 minutes and re-plug to AC power and redo the cabling. Switch on the TV and see if it works..

3. Powering down the set or putting it in standby may have allowed the power supply to cool. Weak capacitors often go out of spec when they cool, thus preventing a section of the power supply from firing up properly again. There is a simple trick...just warm the back of the TV with a hair dryer for 5-7 mins after you have unplugged the TV. Look for the little areas of holes in the back panel of TV. Use these as your guide at where to use the hairdryer, but don't hold the dryer too close (say 5-6inches away). (Make sure the dryer is on High heat). If the TV doesn't turn on after you have heated it up (like it tries to come on but then turns off) you need to unplug the TV again, this resets it. And repeat those steps till it works. Resetting the TV after it fails to turn on is the key. Also, just leave the TV on. Don't turn in off. Since it is LCD, it doesn't take much power...only a few bucks extra a month for your utility bill.

4. A circuit board may crack about some of the larger components mounted on it. You can inspect the PCB's for fractures, and then repair them. It may also be poor soldering that has failed. I would be checking for these things first.

Cross your fingers. One of these tips may work. Let's troubleshoot the issue and try to get it working: If you are using a remote, check the batteries in it. If you are using several remotes with it, try the alternative remote. Sometimes there is a glitch affecting the remote for a Roku where it won't turn on the TV other than a powered black screen and you have to use the other remote to turn it off and back on and then the Roku screen pops up. I have not sorted out why. Check Power Cord and Connections: First, ensure that the power cord is securely plugged into both the TV and the electrical outlet.
