Sounds like a bad board in the main drive unit. If you call their customer service, they will walk you thru a short troubleshoot, then more than likely send you a new board. I have three of these openers and all have failed after several years use from the plastic drive gear wearing out, so without seeing your unit, that's what I would guess. The gear is relatively easy to replace and I bought parts from a company called "gatehouse" (www.gatehousesupplies.com). I've only used them once, but I am pleased with the service. Good luck.

I have the same problem. I just removed the cover and discovered a nylon gear had been worn out. I found lots of shavings inside the cover. The nylon gear is beneath the exterior chain gear. I am looking for information on how to replace it, if I can find the part. If you decide to look at yours, unplug the power and remove the sheet metal screws securing the bottom portion of the cener cover to the front and back covers. Then just remove the upper screws from the center cover. Good luck.

If you have a Craftsman/Liftmaster with a 3 function wall control:
use the lift button to turn the light off. push and hold the light button for @1min. until the light flashes. This should reset your operator to have the light turn on when you walk through the photo eyes.

Try to readjust the door travel settings detailed in your owners manual Pg. 27 - 29

Hello,Linda well this is your lucky day ,I have installed garage door openers for sears for 10 years and i can tell you that craftsman,chamberlain ,and liftmaster are all the same machine and manufactured under the liftmaster name , if you buy it from home depot it will be a chamberlain ,if you buy it at sears ,it will be a craftsman, and if you go to commercial building supplier it will be a liftmaster! now getting that out of the way even though they are all compatible ,there is one thing that stands in their way and that,s time ,For example if your chamberlain machine is 5 years old and you went to sears last week ,the chances of the frequency being the same are not good , most likely you have the wireless keypad , one way to test the sears keypad against the chamberlain machine is to locate the smart button on your machine ,this button allows for programming of remotes and keypads , to test and see exactly what im talking about take your remote and locate the smart button ,if you have three buttons on the remote press one of the buttons that are not being used on the remote ,above the smart button their will be a blinking light ,if you press your remote button you will notice the light go from a blink to a rapid flash , This is telling you that you are sending a signal for programming to the machine , well the keypad is exactly the same all you have to do is push the enter button on the keypad and have someone watch for the rapid blinking light ,if they are compatible the light will blink rapidly on the machine so all you have to do now is have someone press the smart button once on the machine your indicator light will now be a solid light you will have approx 60 seconds then to put a 4 digit code in the keypad and then press and hold down the enter button on the keypad , at this point you will notice the lightbulbs on the chamberlain machine to shut off and come back on this is to tell you that the machine accepted the code , after thats been done you can use your keypad , you can also find the owners manual to the chamberlain and follow the same instructions to programming the remote , they are identical in programing , if your keypad is not the same frequency you can also tell by looking at the frequency code on the backside of the keypad and also the chamberlain unit usually where the light bulb is will be its code

If you have to hold down the button to close the door, you are bypassing the sensors ...
Check the alignment of the sensors. Should see a solid GREEN light

unplug the unit before setting codes for travel or stops for travel then plug back in

You should check the gears inside the box, After years , the gears get dry and die, you can by online or from Sears the kit and replace the old gears. I just changed mine...not too difficult :) .

Problem solved, sort of-
My unit has self diagnostic capabilities: next to the remote sync red button, is a yellow light the indicates diagnostic readings by blinking. In my case the light was flashing 5 times after the door failed to close. This meant RPM sensor failure. I rechecked the sensor and "flywheel" cap and found that it was not completely secured. With the "flywheel" in the proper position, providing readings for the RPM sensor, the door completely closed.
But my yellow diagnostic light is still flashing 5 times. My door is operating correctly, but the diagnostic feedback is still not completely happy with my RPM sensor. So I will keep and eye on it.
