Pop-up flash
make sure after popping up the flash, you didn't change the mode into "no flash" mode....an easy way to check is put the flash back down, then proceed to take another photo. If the flash pops up again but did not flash, you have a faulty camera (assuming battery level is at least until the 1/3 mark).

Initialization Error on my nikon d40
This is usually caused by a failure of the motor in the SQ unit on the side of the mirror box. It raises and lowers the mirror, ***** the shutter, and operates the aperture mechanism.

Zoom ring on 18-55 mm lens is locked/stuck
Are you sure it's the zoom ring that's stuck, and not the focus ring? The focus ring doesn't move when the camera is in autofocus.
If it's indeed the zoom ring that's stuck, you can spend more money than the lens is worth in repairs, or buy a replacement (circa 35 dollars on ebay) for dreadfully cheap. Good luck.

I could not found white balance in shooting mood
You can set the white balance only in one of the P, S, A, and M modes. In the point&shoot modes the camera will always automatically set the white balance (and just about everything else). In one of the PSAM modes you can set the white balance in the Shooting menu. Full details are in the "White Balance (P, S, A, and M Modes)" section of the manual (page 70 in my copy).

Black speck in images
Take a look at "The Low-Pass Filter" subsection of the "Caring for the Camera" section of the manual (page 105 in my copy). If you need a manual, you may download a copy
here.

Nikon d40 monitor is black when camera is on
Does the menu show when you press the MENU button? Can you see your pictures when you press the Playback button (right-pointing triangle)? If so, then there's nothing to fix.The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. There's a viewfinder which allows you to frame and compose your picture. The LCD monitor is for menus, camera settings, and picture review. LiveView, which allows you to use the monitor for shooting, is a recent development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, both introduced years after the D40.

Nikon d40 wont shoot continuously
Check your card that it is big enough. Also, make sure to format the card before taking any pictures in the camera you are to use it. If you do not, and it has been in another camera, corruption can occur and problems as you have stated as well. The card may not be supported by this camera. Read your manual. Reset all settings to factory defaults. Then set them as you wish.If the problem continues, do more testing as follows.Remove the battery and replace it with a fully charged battery, or recharge the battery.Hope it works

Nikon Capture NX will not open black and white jpegs
Nikon Capture when initially installed you have to tell it what types of files to open.... IT has 3 tick boxes for NEF (Nikon Raw Files), TIFF, & JPEg, you actually have to tell it which types you want NX to open. The easiest way to fix the problem maybe to reinstall the program and reset the file association as you install it.
Hope this may help.

My Nikon D40 flash won't pop up, but still
These pics are not the greatest quality, taken with my iPhone, but once you take your flash cover off it will be pretty obvious what 2 U brackets are under the L bracket (that hooks around the mount). Make sure the two U shaped brackets are LEVEL with each other, mine had 1 tucked down & as soon as I used a small screw driver & pulled it out to make it even, I pushed the flash down, hit my button to pop the flash up & it released. Please remember!!! When the cover is off & you engage the flash there is a chance that the flash bulb will shift up & can potentially fall out. I would put the black flash cover back on before you engage your flash to keep this from happening, otherwise you could get a jolt from the electrical system trying to put your flash bulb back in (speaking from experience). Good luck!
