Presser foot down, but still get error "E1"
I had the same problem. It started after I took the cover off to fix something else. After I screwed the cover back on, I kept getting the E1 message even when the foot was already down. I took the cover off again, and I found that there is a metal tab at the top left of the front cover, that is pushed by a metal tab in the back that moves when you put the presser foot up or down. You can see this metal tab moving in the back if you put the foot up and down with the cover off. Just putting the foot down(I think) before putting the cover back on fixed it so one metal tab is on the correct side of the other metal tab.

Bobbin will not wind
For ~$25 you can purchase a stand-alone bobbin winder from the local fabric store (JoAnn's, Hancocks) or the internet, ie Amazon.com.

My machine starting moving backwards.
I had this same problem. Something is wrong with the mechanism that moves the feed dogs. There's a slide switch on the back of the machine that raises and lowers the dogs. Unfortunately, most of the mechanism is made of plastic, so there may be a 'stripping' issue -- something's not catching correctly. I took off the throat plate and cleaned everything out (lots of lint in there!). Remove the bobbin, thread and needle. This way you can run the machine and see how things are moving inside. Notice the long screw/rod hanging in the back. This is supposed to rest in an indentation on an arm just below it. Mine had somehow worked its way out of that 'cup', so the dogs weren't moving correctly. Once I got that piece back in place, everything worked fine. Good luck!

actually e2 is the button hole lever being down. e6 means that the thread is tangled and to prevent the motor from overheating the machine automatically stops. All you have to do is re-thread the machine and take the bobbin out, untangle it and put it back in and sew. This usually works. If it keeps happening, there could be a few things wrong.
1. if you are using thick fabric your tension should be lower. normal tension is 5.
2. your machine is out of alignment. take it in to a service center, they can fix it in 5 minutes. to find a service center near you go to http://www.brother-usa.com/service/
3. your needle is old or bent and should be replaced.
4. Your needle is too thick, standard is 80. The thicker the fabric, the thicker the needle.
