I bought and returned two of these machines that were refurbished. The sewing machine works fine if you are just doing straight, zig-zag, or any other type of stich. You can put the same piece of material with stabilizer in a hoop, install the embroidery module and it will jam EVERY time under the needle plate. I returned both of these refurbished machines and bought a brand new one. It did the same thing right out of the box. I believe this is a common problem with this product, from many many posts I have seen on the internet. I gave up on the Brother SE-270D as an embroidery machine. I bought a new machine from Singer....I would suggest others do the same.

It's the bobbin thread. Also, it does not have to be Brother brand. Any 60wt thread will work. I get mine at http://www.threadart.com
They have it on large cones, and I use a cone holder to fill my bobbins. I have not had a single problem since. I like this thread because it has a sheen to it. I also have a longarm quilting machine & I use this bobbin thread 95% of the time. Also, be sure to check the bobbin area (remove the plastic & the metal plates) for lint buildup... I have a small, soft artists paint brush that I use to remove the lint build up with. I check after every embroidery run.
And for the thread not coming through...mine does it when I change thickness of threads. There is an adjustment wheel on the front of the machine, I turn that...seems to make the difference...not even sure that is what it's for...but it works for me.

My Brother SE 270D will not allow me to sew or embroider. I keep receiving the "Lower presser foot" message even after the foot is in the "down" position. I have tried unplugging the machine and the same message comes up each time.
This happened to me and I eventually realized that there is a small door flap at the top near the "4" in the threading series that can get stuck open. Normally this flap goes up and down with the presser foot, but if it gets stuck open even when the presser foot is down, tapping it or closing it manually will make the error go away.

I have a Brother SE-350 and I just received the PED-Basoc I ordered online. I thought I followed the installation correctly, but I do not see any images or designs on the card. I unistalled the software and reinstalled, is it possible I deleted the designs from the card?
Can I start over from scratch? I tried unplugging and replugging in the unit from the USB but I do not get prompted like I did the first time I plugged it in
Make sure you have the correct hoop size on the program selected, if it is other than 100x100 on the smaller machines, the designs don't show up when you try to embroider one.

Okay, fair enough. The needle does not appear to be bent. Neither the upper or lower threads are jammed. And not the machine will not sew. Horrible grinding noise and the balance wheel is locked and won't budge an inch. I bought this machine for my Mother's birthday in October. This is only the 3rd time we've used it!
It is under warantee for 12 months, so I would recommend you phone the dealer to arrange for them to have a look at it.....if you have any samples of sewing, take them too.

I have removed and installed my ped-basic several times and keep getting the error message No car writer connected. I have used it successfully several times now it wont work, I have it set for 4 x 4 hoop.
A client of mine had this same problem. The driver seemed to be installed correctly in device manager (start, run, type "devmgmt.msc") press enter. I tried many things to get it to work. Then I downloaded the Windows Vista setup files on the brother site. That fixed the problem. I will post full step by step instructions @ http://rivertownnetworking.com
Hope this helps,
Shane

I don't know if you can help me or not but i'm getting an error that says MFC application has stopped working. It's coming up when I open one of my embroidery programs. I have deleted the program and reinstalled but i still keep getting this message. When I reinstalled the PED BASIC program (brother embroidery card reader program) it still comes up with the error. It's saying on my problem sheet that the Brother Driver is not compatible with my version of WIndows.... I'm running it on my lap top. That's all it says..I get a pop up that just says MFC APPLICATION STOPPED WORKING, windows will close program and find solution...it never shuts down until I do it. My machine is the Brother SE-270D, but the problem is with the PED BASIC software. And I've narrowed it down to the drivers...something is not compatible with them!!
If your operating system is Windows 7, please try this tutorial (it's in an easy spanish): http://autorneto.com/tecnologia/gadgets/brother-en-windows-7/
Else, if you don't have this operating system, please specify which one do you have.
Hope my tutorial helps; write comments on the tutorial's page and here also. Make it known if it worked for you (only if you have Windows 7).
Good luck

This is a used machine I have had for over 3 years with no problems. Today, while winding my bobbin, the bobbin stopped turning. I could hear the motor still turning, but the bobbin iself wouldn't turn. Is there anything I can do or am I doomed to an expensive repair shop that I cannot afford?
the rubber ring on the bobbin winder has probably gone bad which would mean replacing it but you can buy a portable bobbin winder called a sidewinder for around 20.00

Feed dogs are stuck in the down position on my Brother Pacesetter ULT 2002D embroidery/sewing machine. They are suppose to be down when the embroidery unit is in place, but when the sewing unit is re-attached the will not come back up. The switch moves back and forth, but the feed dogs will not come up.
The feed dogs come up as soon as you start sewing again. Just make sure they're in the up position and start sewing.
