I have a gateway fpd1730 monitor on power up it

Check the fuses (surface mounted) on the inverter board. Check to see if you get the 12vdc at the inverter board also, worst case will be the lamps assembly.

I normally leave my computer on when I go to work,

You may have dying power supply due to bad DC filter caps, try this monitor with other PC first.

Picure does not fill out the screen

First try it on another video source. If it changes it's the source. If I hook a monitor to my laptop and put it display and external at the same time it uses the wide screen settings of my laptop display. If I go external only it fills it totally out. Also get into the on screen display and find where you can do reset or auto adjust. If nothing works regardless of machine it's on then the display may be failing and need service. Capacitors on the power board in LCD monitors since about 2004 have been prone to failure.

The welcome ad and tour button is on my desktop

Have you tired simply restarting the computer? You can also right click the Task Bar and choose Task Manager. Look in the applications Tab and stop it from running there. If it is not listed in Applications then look in Processes and stop it there. The Tour will stop running after you stop it 3 times.

My monitor keepfading outand going to a black

3 to 4 years old are due time to look for bad caps in the power supply and inverter section,
Most common failure in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

My fpd 1730 moniters brightness and contrast are

nonnie707, It is very possible that your monitor's internal or external (lay on floor) "switch-mode-power-supply" has a problem. Prove that your pc is working by connecting KNOWN GOOD monitor to your pc!!! If you are not electronics technician then you will need to question Gateway as to warranty service or possible swapout for a REFURBISHED unit if your unit is deemed as premature failure. May cost $ for swap. READ my FIXYA profile and that of other FIXYA TECH's (buddymc, budmrtn) for more options as to "what to do"!!! Remember, If very strange and weird things start to happen (occur) with "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" backlit LCD display, the first place I would investigate would be the units "switch-mode-power-supply" Good luck with the repair. 12fixlouie

When system restarts, monitor blank

If you can see a dim image on the monitor then there is a back-light problem.
The fault could be an inverter problem which supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or the CCFL lamp maybe faulty. The CCFL lamp is a mini fluro tube.

Sounds as if your monitor is not receiving a signal from your video card. In all likelihood, the video card came unseated during the move. Open the case and re-seat the video card, that should do the trick.

Write back if that does not solve the problem.
