Can you get on the internet? Check your outgoing mail server settings and make sure you have your login information correct and that outgoing requires authentication. Make sure you outgoing smtp settings are correct per your provider.

this happens to me when I'm driving and phone is switching towers(providers) and it screws up your phone. I found that turning on airplane mode for a min or so then turning back off fixes it. It's a pain but only solution I've found to cheap straight talk service. I would assume it is caused when it tries to use data on a carriers tower that they don't have access to and their gateway it denying access thus the error
