It soungs like you may have compressor going bad or a freon leak. Being a 1970 it would not be cost effective to repair.

You can use a hairdryer to speed it up but you need to fix the defrost sytem.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Excess frost especially near the door is caused by door gaskets being bad. The gasket should hold a dollar bill snug.
Another possibility is auto defrost failure. - Remove the cover on the rear inside the freezer to see if the coils are heavily iced.

Sound as though you need a defrost timer that is located around temp control and light in fridge side.If it is faulty it will not go into a defrost making the freezer ice up and cause alot of trouble.hope i helped thanks:)

your defrost drain is frozen remove the rear bottom panel on the freezer at the back insede the freezer and clear the defrost drain there will be a hole under the ice you just need to clear the drain not buy a new freezer

It seems your temp. control board or thermistor is not reading the temps and just keeps on running and running. Can you lower it to the lowest setting and (with a thermometer) see if the temps actually get warmer inside (will take a day or two to warm up). As for the ice on the bottom if the drain for the defrost cycle is plugged you may be getting water inside which then re-freezes. Let us know what you find and we can go from there.

You should check the drain hose inside underneath the freezer.This is done at the back down below. Mine was looped too high and water could not get out. I took the loop off that was holding the hose and now water can drain away without freezing. You can pour warm water down the drain hole to melt the ice in the tube if you remove the grate covering it inside the freezer. I have read that several Kenmore upright freezer
owners have the same problem. I was astonished that this was the problem and I had put up with it for too long, defrosting the freezer every 2-3 months!.Give it a try!

• if the door was not closed correctly for a while then a lot of condensation will be accumulated on the freezer coils. 
• then when going into defrost it melts this ice/frost and overflows the pan or container under the machine which relies on evaporation to dispel  of the water.
  
• empty the pan under the refrigerator if you can, then give it another day, it will get back to normal.

sounds like a sealed system problem lack of freon, possible tubing leak

sounds like you have a clogged/frozen defrost drain tube. removing back panel of freezer will give you acess to drain trough, melt away the ice with a hair dryer, youll find a drain hole under there somwhere,pouring boiling water down the drain will clear it pretty quickly( i use a steam machine purchased from the infomercials)

LOW / NO BATTERY ALARM The Low/No battery alarm will activate when the power level of the battery becomes low. The display will alternate between "b" (Battery, See figure 8) and the cabinet temperature, the red alarm light will become illuminated and the control panel will beep every five seconds. try unplugging it and leaving it unplugged for a while. 15 minutes maybe? Leave door closed so it stays relatively cold. It should reset the unit.

The light may be staying on and creating heat, or the unit thinks the door is still open. Or the door seal is worn and is letting cold out. Or It needs gas. Question edited for full 'make model (what it is). Question moved to Maker category. 'FF' is Fast Freeze. Do a Power Reset. Disconnect from the mains for 5 minutes and plug back in. If that doesn't fix it, you will need a service call. It may have leaked refrigerant gas.
