It is recommended to remove the ground cable on the battery first, and then the hot, or RED cable.
When reconnecting, the REdD should be hooked up first and then the ground.

I hope this helps you.

Not sure I see where that would be an issue

All Battery cables are removed with the proper
size box wrench --from the battery

If your replacing an entire cable, you may also
need sockets on the other ends

Your battery clamps need to be clean/and tight-remove them and clean them and the battery posts with a wire brush. If you go to a local auto parts store, the make brushes specifically for this that clean both the posts and the lugs for the battery cables. After cleaning, make sure they are on tight-your description is a bad connection at the battery, not the starter.

How do you put a starter solenoid in a 1988 ford f150?

Ford does not put the solenoid on the starter itself, so then it is just a relay, usually on a fender. It will have 4 wires. Two thick ones from the battery and to the starter. And 2 thin ones from ignition switch and to ground.
