I have a 1987 Dodge Ram 50 2wd 2.0L carb. , when i go above 35mph with throttle full pressed it starts to lose power and the vehicle starts to move back an forth, front to back, like it maybe running out of gas when trying to reach 40mph making it impossible to do freeway driving also when going up hills it immediately drops in speed making it impossible to drive uphill (the max i've reached going uphill is 15mph ). I replaced the fuel pump, replaced the rotor an cap, new spark plugs & wires, new air filter, cleaned the carb, cleaned the gas tank (rid of buildup), adjusted timing.. running out of options, i can really afford much, so im trying to fix it best i can myself. Any clue or help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Well, i assume you did a compression check and have the plugs gapped properly? Okay then, this might not be what you want to hear but, disconnect the fuel lines, install a low pressure electric fuel pump(between 3 and 10 psi one) and install a variable pressure regulator, set it at 4psi and drive the truck. still need more power move to 5psi, adjust untill your happy.

the previous owner did say he installed a new fuel pump (mechanical crankshaft type) and also said that this has never done it before til after the new fuel pump was installed, make no sense to why he replaced it to begin with, when it wasn't doing this before. the solution you gave me seems alil steep, i did gap the plugs properly but i haven't done a compression test just yet.

thanks for the 1 thumbsup, pretty harsh for a guy who knows nothing about auto mechanics. mechanical fuel pump driven by crankshaft or camshaft, the lobe that the pump rides on can get worn away. since you dont have xray vision, i was giving you a solution that bypasses fuel delivery problems because of a worn lobe. so excuse me for answering your question.

I have done everything that you have mentioned and come to find out the carburetor for 87-89 are worthless. Too many emission adjustments and engineering has caused them to be, basically, a piece of junk. Get a weber carburetor and get rid of the factory is what I would advise. Almost guarantee this IS your problem.

I have a similar problem with my 89 Ram 50, 2.6L. I had the cat checked, good. Replaced fuel filter and pump. Checked the float level. I have not done a compression test yet. I also have not changed the cap, rotor and wires yet.

I have a 1987 Dodge Ram 50 2.0L 2WD Carb. Truck just hit 200,000miles and the Gas & Temp gauge stopped working. Tired to look for a fuse to see if there was one, no luck. Unplugged the connectors on...

Hi,
Check your fuses an also b sure the line going to each is securely connected to the proper outlet/connector. Did you hit a bump or something to pull the wires lose?
Sounds like you will need to check each fuse as well. Try turning the engine on - pull off the wire to the temperature sending unit and ground it to the engine - see if the gauge moves then. This can give you a good clue.

It bogs down when you go up a hill or when you give it full throtle

I had the same problem with mine, it did not pick up speed on the hills and max at 35mph on steep climbs. It ended up being a diaphram on the back of the carborator that does not come in the carb rebuild kit so you will have to find a carborator specialist in your area and see if they carry it. That diaphram controls the secondaries for the extra horse power needed for picking up speed and going up hills.

My 1999 dodge durango is having hard time starting and then won't stay running.

I had a simmilar problem with a RAM the throttle body was dirty. You may try cleaning the intake with a good carb spray. This may not have happened to you but my battery had gone dead and when I replaced it my vehicle would not run well (dying out).I clened the intake and it runs fine.A mechanic told me that when a vehicle loses power (battery)the computer resets and if the intake is dirty the fuelwill not flow well therefore causing the computer to send more or less fuel to the throttle body.Although after cleaning it my o2 sensor needed to be cleaned and reset the check engine light
