Could be several things. Battery connection, starter solenoid, starter, neutral safety switch, ignition switch. First have someone hit the starter while the key is in the start position. If no start, check to see if voltage is at the starter solenoid. Try moving the gear indicator back and forth from P to D with the key in crank position. Make sure the park brake is set. Make sure the battery cables are clean and tight. There should be several feed wires coming off the positive post. Make sure all are ok. Some are fusible links and may have burnt.
Turn your lights on and then try to crank the motor...If your lights go out, you have a bad connection(s) on your battery...If they stay on and dim, your starter is drawing current but not turning. If they stay the same intensity, your may need to check your starter relay as it is not putting the starter in the circuit. How long has it been since you last ran the truck? Try the same sequence as above but with the trans in neutral instead of park...could be your neutral start switch also.
first you have to make sure full batt power available, second turn the key (if any) to on position . third jump contacts on the starter motor to create power circulation and hear if starter o selonoid works.
trace the wire from the ignition switch start position to the starter solenoid the wire may have fallen off the starter solenoid , have a loose connection or be corroded or may have a fuse in the circuit that has blown
one easy way is to have someone hold key in crank ing position, then another person needs to hit or tap the starer housing itself.if engine begins to crank intermittently or ur cliking noise turns into small jolts of the starter trying to crank then u can bet its the strtr motor. u do need a charged batt for this test. also chek ur battery grounds they can dramatically affect starter operation if we have a voltage drop anywhere in starter circuit .chek batt cables r tight on batt posts, loose batt cables on battery will also give u clicking noise w no starter operation
starter pinion may be jammed hit on it with a block of wood when some else tries to start it...this will usually only work one time but it"ll prove that you have a bad starter solenoid. make sure also that you try nuetrla position when trying to start you might have a bad neutral saftey switch. you can also make up a jumper with aligator clips and hook one end up to the pos battery and the other to the 12v position of the start will key is on this way if it starts then youll know that its a wiring issue maybe ignition switch.
You have a starter relay that could be bad, follow your + cable from the battery, it should lead to a small relay that looks like what is on a riding mower. If this gets cracked on the inside or the contacts are bad, this will prevent starting and a clicking sound will occur. If it's broke completely, it won't click.
Its likely that you have either a bad ignition switch or a bad neutral safety switch (if stickshift, clutch switch) Try starting in neutral...if it starts, change neutral switch (jump across clutch switch, check starting in neutral with your foot on the brake) Ignition switch is on top of steering column under dash.
That relay you are talking about is your starter solenoid. If your car is a manual, put it in neutral with teh ebrake on. Turn the key to the on position. Take a screwdriver and jump the 2 bigger posts. If your starter engages, then your solenoid is shot. They are pretty cheap and easy to fix. Keep the Dodge's alive!! PLease rate!
Starts by jumping solenoid to starter but not turn of key?
