Your car is in "limp"mode because the computer doesn't know what speed your doing,So it doesn't shift,
There are three possible reasons for this,
#1= input sensor faulty on transmission,
#2=output sensor faulty on transmission,
#3=speed sensor faulty on transmission,
you need to have the transmission codes read to know which one,Autozone checks codes for free.

I have a 1998 dodge intrepid 3.2 automatic having transmission shift issues

Well, unless you want to get into rebuilding your transmission, I would recommend a filter change and adding Lucas Transmission Fix. I have seen that combo fix many troublesome transmissions. Other than that, you still could have a sticky valve in the valve body or even a worn/broken band or clutch. Basically, the TCM is telling you that it commanded a gear change and it didn't see evidence of that gear change happening hence the limp mode. If the Lucas didn't fix it, and it was my car, i would get a Power Torque transmission from Oreilley's with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty, install that an be done with it- get back to enjoying the car.

1996 Dodge stratus es automatic wont shift outta low gear .is this a sensor issue?

probably not if it is limp mode
the ECM puts the car in limp mode to prevent serious problems in the engine or transmission
could be no coolant, sump oil , transmission oil etc
run the fault codes and find the reason for the mode

95 stealth...what else can it be? I bought this car 3 months ago and haven't gotten to drive it yet. It is stuck in limp mode.

Can you pull any errors off the ECU? Do you have the standard dash installed? My Alfa will not change up from second if my dash is not installed.

Why is my 1993 dodge stealth in the failesafe mode?

I'm guessing you are stuck in one gear---either 1st or 2nd? If this is the case the computer was sent an error message by one of the sensors that has detected a fault/malfunction and it has gone in to LIMP or failsafe mode---this mode prevents further damage to other componets and alows you to "limp" the car home. Sometimes it is the ECM or TCM itself that is bad, but most often on a Dodge it is either the output or input sensor that is faulty and/or its the speed sensor...these can all be replaced easily without much labor involved. Have the codes checked and pressure readings on the transmission diagnosed for conformation. Good luck and i hope this information helps.

WILL NOT UP SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR

Are you sure it is 1st ? Sounds like your car is going into " Limp home mode", usually a transmission computer fault ( very common in mitsubishis') You will probably need to visit your dealer and get a diagnostic done.

2001 chevy cavalier transmission only has rev. and 2nd is this an electrical problem???

I had this problem with my '91 Dodge spirit, I'm not good with automatic transmissions, but basically, that's in 'limp mode' or a fail-safe to avoid damage when something fails, unless you're comfortable rebuilding it yourself, you'll have to take it in

The car starts off in 2nd gear (automatic) and wint change out.1992 dodge stealth

My Chrysler Concorde lxi did the same thing. The computer for the transmission has a "limp home" mode that places the car in 2nd, and won't let it shift. This is to reduce damage to the transmission while you are still able to drive it home, or to the nearest shop. This isn't something you can fix yourself...take it to a reputable transmission shop, who can plug their diagnostic computer (specialized for the transmission computer) to pinpoint the problem.

Limp in mode

Your shift control computer is getting a bad sensor value. So either a shift control sensor has gone bad, or there is a problem with your transmission. Either take it to a mechanic or buy a scan tool so you can find out the exact nature of the problem if you're going to attempt to fix this yourself.
