Of course an impact wrench will help will loosening the nut but you need a spanner wrench to hold the pulley in place. On the pulley of
my '96 Camry there are four threaded holes. I'm considering fabricating
a spanner wrench that would fit into these holes...
Ive made do with what i can many times, When i was stuck on the side of the road 100+ miles from home with a broken timing belt i used my power steering belt wraped around it self and hooked to another pulley to crack that dam thing free!!
If you can do it with out fing up the four threaded holes then do it,, You may need the four threaded holes in good condition in the next step, when you need a puller to get the pulley off.

to remove clutch fan you need to remove upper fan shroud, you need large wrench to remove the fan clutch retaining nut to remove fan and clutch away from the engine drive belt should keep pulley from turning while loosen fan clutch retaining nut.if pulley belt turns while loosen fan clutch bolt remove drive belt use strap wrench hold pulley while you remove fan clutch bolt this procedure for checvrolet if you working on volkswagon you need spanner wrench hold the idler pulley while you use large wrench to loosen the large drive nut to fan clutch. you have to remove fan with clutch from engine then you can remove clutch from fan you can go to auto parts stores rent a spanner wrench try auto zone they rent out tools.
Place the crankshaft pulley bolt removal tool over the end of the crankshaft bolt. Tool will hold the pulley in place while you apply torque to the bolt with an impact wrench. Start the air compressor by plugging it in and turn it on. Set the pressure of the compressor on the highest setting. Attach air hose on the air compressor to the air inlet and the locking mechanism using the quick-connect lock on the end of the air compressor hose. Set the impact wrench to turn counterclockwise. Spray the crankshaft bolt with penetrating oil. Make sure you soak the bolt head in oil so that it is easier for the wrench to remove. Secure the socket end of the wrench to the pulley bolt and pull the trigger on the impact wrench. You might need to reapply penetrating oil several times during this process to loosen the bolt up. Eventually, the bolt will come off 215 lbs torque, and simply stated righty tighty, lefty loosy. Hope this will assist you.
1 Locate the crankshaft pulley on your vehicle. This is usually on the driver's side, but may be on the passenger's side if your timing belt is located on the passenger's side. Place the end of the tire wrench over the lug nuts of the appropriate wheel of your vehicle and turn the wrench about 45 degrees. 2 Put your emergency brake on. Then use the floor jack to jack up the vehicle's front jack point (an extension of the frame).3 Put the jack stands under the frame of the vehicle. Then, lower the vehicle onto the jack stands. 4 Continue to loosen and remove the lug nuts, and pull the wheel off.5 Remove the plastic rivets that hold the splash guard in place in the wheel well. To do this, you need to wedge the screwdriver in between the rivets and the splash guard and pry them out.6 Locate the crankshaft pulley. It will be right behind the splash guard you just removed.7 Remove the crankshaft bolt using the crankshaft bolt remover tool. Place the tool over the crank pulley bolt in the center of the pulley. This device prevents the pulley from rotating while you loosen the bolt.8 Place the socket end of the impact wrench over the crankshaft bolt remover tool. Set the impact rench to turn counterclockwise and turn on your air compressor. Wait until the compressor is fully charged. Then, work the bolt loose. It may take a while as this bolt normally requires in excess of 800 ft lbs of torque to remove.9 Attach the arms of the crankshaft pulley removal tool over the pulley and tighten the tool to the pulley using the tool's supplied bolts. Continue to tighten the tool using the bolts until the crankshaft pulley is pulled off the crankshaft.
CRANKSHAFT PULLEY IS THE HARMONIC BALANCER.YOU NEED THESE TOOLS TO REMOVE HARMONIC BALANCER, YOU NEED HARMONIC BALANCER REMOVER AND INSTALLER TOOL.YOU NEED A LARGE PIN SPANNER WRENCH TO HOLD HARMONIC BALANCER IN PLACE WHILE LOOSEN THE HARMONIC BALANCER BOLT.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Using a ½-inch-drive ratchet and the 19 mm socket, turn the center bolt on the crankshaft so that number-one cylinder piston is at top dead center (TDC). You will know you ware at TDC when the mark on the crank is in alignment with the arrow on the timing cover.
Disconnect the cruise control connector and remove the cruise control actuator. Loosen the upper mounting bolt with the 14 mm socket. Use a 12 mm socket to loosen the lower nut then use a 10 mm socket to loosen the adjuster from the power steering pump and remove the belt.
Loosen the upper air conditioner mounting bolt using the 14 mm socket. Use the 12 mm socket to loosen the lower nut and adjusting bolt on the alternator and remove the alternator/AC belt. Remove the valve cover using a 10 mm socket.
Place the jack behind the left front wheel where the arrow is located indicating the jack location, and raise the vehicle. Put the jack stand under the subframe behind the jack, then lower the jack. Remove the left front wheel for easy access to the crank pulley. Using a block of wood atop the jack, place the jack under the oil pan and lift with slight pressure to hold the engine in place. Remove the side engine mount using a 17 mm deep socket.
Take off the dipstick, pipe tube and upper timing cover using a 10 mm socket. Then remove the timing belt adjuster rubber seal without loosening the adjuster nut. Take off the crankshaft pulley bolt. Use the chain wrench to hold the the crankshaft pulley while turning the crankshaft pulley bolt with a 19 mm socket. Use the 10 mm wrench and 10 mm socket to remove the bolts on the lower cover. Remove the lower cover and mark the location of the cam, crank and balancer shaft with Liquid Paper. Remove the balancer shaft belt and timing belt.
Install the timing belt and the balancer shaft belt in the reverse order of removing them. During Installation of the crank pulley, coat the threads of the crank pulley bolt with engine oil and tighten it to 159 foot-pounds. Finally, adjust the tension of the power steering and alternator belts as well.
TURN CRANKSHAFT BOLT COUNTERCLOCKWISE TO LOOSEN. YOU HAVE RIGHT HAND THREADS.ENGINE TURNING CLOCKWISE.YOU NEED A STRAP WRENCH HOLD CRANKSHAFT PULLEY WHILE LOOSEN IT.BUT YOU NEED A CRANKSHAFT DAMPER REMOVAL TOOL.OR HARMONIC BALANCER REMOVAL TOOL.YOU NEED STRAP WRENCH TO HOLD CRANKSHAFT PULLEY WHEN TIGHTEN IT.TORQUE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT 90 - 98 FT LBS. Instructions Things You'll Need:·Set of quarter-inch drive sockets Quarter-inch drive ratchet Set of half-inch drive sockets Half-inch drive air gun Set of metric wrenches Special tools for holding camshaft timing #2065-A and injection pump #2064
Step 1 Remove the accessory drive belts and the accessory drive belt tensioner. Remove the upper timing belt cover and the valve cover. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the No.1 cylinder is atop, dead center, with the flywheel timing marks aligned.
Step 2 Install the special tool setting bar (#2065-A) on the rear of the camshaft. If it does not fit, turn the crankshaft once more and line up the timing marks again in the hole of the transmission housing.
Step 3 Insert locking pin #2064 into the injection pump to hold it in position. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts, the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut and allow the tensioner to move away from the belt. Loosely tighten the nut to hold the tensioner out of the way. Remove the top guide pulley and the timing belt.
Step 4 Make sure that the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up and that the camshaft setting bar and injection locking pin are in place. Loosen the camshaft bolt a half turn and tap the sprocket with a soft mallet to loosen it off its taper. The sprocket should move freely. Install the top guide pulley and torque to 18 foot pounds of torque.
Step 5 Install the new timing belt, starting on the right side and working counterclockwise. Keep the tension on the right nontensioned side. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut. Using the two-pin wrench, turn the tensioner pulley clockwise until the notch and raised mark are aligned. Torque the tensioner pulley nut to 15 foot pounds of torque. Make sure the flywheel timing mark is still aligned.
Step 6 Torque the camshaft bolt to 33 foot pounds of torque. Remove the locking pin from the injection pump and remove the camshaft setting bar. Turn the crankshaft two turns and check the alignment on the flywheel. Make sure that the setting bar can be inserted easily and that the injection pump locking pin can be inserted. Install all components in reverse order of removal and torque the crankshaft bolt to 18 foot pounds of torque.
My Recommendation - Pay an authorized VW mechanic $500 to replace the timing belt water pump an tensioner, and sleep better knowing that the job was done right. Just too many places for a novice car mechanic to screw up.
