Glow plugs if it's happening in the morning on a cold start

you can test this by, turning key to 2nd turn..... not starting it.. wait for glow plug on dash to go off, then repeat a second time, wait 4 seconds then start the van. if it starts easy, then it's the glow plugs. easy to change, not to bad in price

but if it's still hard to start, Then my friend there will be a few tests you will need to perform.

    1. dye test the cylinder head, this is to see if any cracks, basically it's a test tube thing that fits to the water bottle / radiator cap inlet with a chemical in it, it will change colour (yellow) if the head or head gasket has a leak - (if carbon monoxide "aka" exhaust fumes mixes with the water) .. there will be plenty of people that will say that if the head or head gasket is gone on a diesel then it will not start as it needs compression, let me tell you with enough swings of the engine especially in a ford ranger where the engine is a rugged beast then it will generate enough compression, believe me. That's why i personally perform the dye test just to be sure. Test best performed when engine is hot and literally a 5 - 10 min job

    2. If the head is ok then injectors and diesel pump overhaul and retune

Sometimes diesel engines will put out black smoke under extreme acceleration. Other than that, they shouldn't smoke. Black is excess fuel, White smoke is water and bluish is oil. White smoke on a cool morning is not necessarily a sign of a problem unless it happens every time you start it through a warm day. Hope this helps.

If you fitted other than Ford injectors, that will also give issues of over fueling.

Black smoke from exhaust but computor saying 44.5 mpg around town. 2.0ltr. mondeo deisel

Your duplicate question did not say it was a diesel.
Usually black smoke on a diesel is dirty injectors or the engine temp not reaching normal range.

I have a diesel engine that expells white smoke for 5 to 10 miniuts after start up? The exhaust also smells rich with fuel? I bought the truck used and am trying to fix the problems! Please help.

When an engine expels black smoke it means that the piston rings are going and is consuming oil. And when the color of smoke is white the engine is consuming more fuel. Both are harmful. Black to the engine and pocket while white to the pocket. It seems that the injector need careful attention.
Cold engine does expel white smoke initially. When the temperature rises to normal working temperature the smoke stops. This is normal in your case. 5 to 10 minutes to warm up is normal for any diesel engine. But any thing more than that needs attention.

83 Ford F350 Diesel Dually Smoking from oil Dipstick When the engine warm up, the smoke escapes from the oil dipstick hole. Is it normal for diesel engines? Last week I add smoke stop additive to my oil as...

I have an old IDI 6.9 diesel. They tend to burn oil, and that would be normal. Just keep a check on your fluids, and unless the smoke is excessive it should not be a problem. I must say though, I personally think the IDI's were the best diesels ever built. They last forever. If you really want to treat your truck to a nice treat, after you fill your tank, dump a quart of auto trans fluid in the fuel. The additives, cleaners, and lubricants in the trans fluid really help to clean all the carbon and build up out of the injection pump, and clean the gunk from the valves and cyllinders. I usually do it every other month or so.
