I saw this problem on a 2010 chev diesel. We had to disconnect the battery. His problem was the ignition switch shorted out causing current to feed the starter . There maybe a broken connection with the switch mechanism that is not allowing the switch to change the internal selection slide.
Now if the key is stuck and not returning, then the tumblers may have come apart . This would require a new key and tumbler assembly.

Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.

SOURCE: 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake light problem

You can adjust the switch by putting your thumbs on either side of the switch plunger and pushing toward the brake lever. The switch shaft will ratchet into the new position which is will then be depressed by the brake lever when it is the brake is not being depressed.

SOURCE: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo starter

This means it is the solenoid. But usually on those the starter and solenoid are one unit. They can be purchased individually, but it is usually almost as expensive as replacing the whole unit.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee what cause the starter to keep on turning after i take my hand of the key?

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee what cause the starter to keep on turning after i take my hand of the key? not told does engine run,.. wow. and if did run was starter screaming and grinding in pain, load and nasty sounds.
my guess it did not start the engine but im only guessing.

HAVE THE SAME CAR 2010 AND FULL OEM FACTORY 7000 PAGE SERVICE MANUAL IN IT.

ONLY 3 CAUSES OF ST LINE FAILURE HERE.
DO HAVE THE KEYLESS OPTION?
as in no dash slot to hold the fack key like mine has.
i will not guess 1 cause. will do all.
1; battery is super low now. and causes BCM to go mad. ( i cant hear your starter and hearing matters for 100 points here)
2; starter bad it can in fact stick (jam) or half stick and starter sings super high rpm but not the cranks shaft at all
3 the keyswitch is bad, stuck in ST position failed.
4: starter relay is bad as in contacts inside it welded (called fused)
5: if keyless option? dash has no key slot
6: added remote start box to car? as in remote cranking and starting?

we can see the car and all options on the car. day1 , or added later.

mine has this.
but mine has no remote start.
this yours.
this plugs into dash slot and there is a real key switch there.
when turned off the starter must stop, and engine.
if the starter keeps going , see my list.
for sure charge the cars battery 100 % first and now to do testing
not told engine runs.!!!

1993 jeep grand Cherokee Larado stalling for no reason. we have looked or changed coil, fuel pump, relays, cam sensor inside distributor, this thing still stalls out, but starts right back up.

Crank sensor. Its on the passenger side on the top of tranny. Will have either 1 or 2 10mm bolts holding it on. And a plug. My 94 had the same problem. It would run fine then you shut it off and all it woild do is crank. Wait like an hour and it will start back up. New crank sensor and it was fine

96 grand cherokee starter stays engaged

bad starter relay in the PDC fuse box.
or bad ignition switch control output (crank key signal) to relay bad.
then engine may destroy the starter drive, if this keeps happening.
see page 8w-21 (wiring) for exact circuits.

1995 Jeep grand Cherokee Limited, 5.2 liter. Will not crank when ignition switch is turned to starting position. All warning light and such come on when switch is turned on but when turned to the start...

The problem is likely your neutral switch on the side of the tranny. Wires may have melted and shorted to ground or switch itself may have terminal shorted to ground.

1996 jeep grand cherokee 5.2L v8 is cranking but wont start doesnt look like its getting a spark

Might be your jeep's ecu is bad. Does the check engine light come on your dash, when you turn the ignition key to on, before cranking? If not, the ecu is bad. If the check engine light does come on, it may be the crank sensor is bad on your jeep.

2001 jeep grand cherokee won't start. i turn key on and all power comes on inside but wont crank.

Your dealership can read the codes entered into your car's computer every time it malfunctions. Same problem as yours, however, also gets worse, back up lights won't work, sticks in park (in the gas stationing) (very embarrassing), will only run with foot on gas, etc. It was the "neutral safety switch". $500 fix but runs and starts perfectly all the time.

Ignition problem with jeep

howdy, several things come to mind, so here's a few things to check. most likely you have an automatic transmission, have you tried cranking in neutral instead of park? if you can crank it in neutral then the neutral safety switch/transmission range sensor could be your problem. also, when you turn the key to crank, do you hear the starter relay(in the underhood fusebox) or the starter solenoid clicking? the starter & ignition switch can also cause this problem. check all your fuses inside and under the hood. good luck.
