1984 Dodge Ramcharger Tilt Steering Diagram

I have excess play in the tilt steerin g of my R.C. I know its a common issue, and I have dismanteled the column but still cannot access the column but cannot gain access to the tilt mechanism to see if it can be tightened or not. Does anyone have info and a fullu exploded diagram so I can see what I am missing??

Thanks,

Dan Woodall

Thank you for your help, and I did try that approach, but unfortunately any of the trucks I approached either already had the column removed or parted out, or was a non-tilting type. BUT I did have success in repairing my column, here's how.

Upon removing the ignition switch and three (3) torque head screws I was able to remove the steering column lock housing. At this point I was able to remove the tilt spring (located at the 7 o'clock position in relation to the column) by depressing in on squared opening within the cover and turning approx 45 degrees. You will also notice two (2) threaded pins, one on each side of the cloumn. You need to incert a bolt into each to remove them. I found that a sliding dent puller works quite well for this task. With those now removed you can slide off the shaft bearing housing, exposing the coulmns u-joint and the four (4) 1/4" bolts that tighten the tilt column. CAREFULLY slide the u-joint apart (marking either the top or bottom for alignment upon reassemblly), for this makes easier access to the bolts. Re-tighten these bolts with some thread locker and reassemble the column in reverse order of teardown.

I hope my experience and persiverence in this matter helps those who need it.

    Thanks,
    Danny Woodall

My steering wheel has lots of play up and down , side to side i removed steering wheel i'm stuck on how to get the rest apart to tighten bolts in steering column

you're best to remove the entire column and do it in the bench, if you can get a diagram it will help a lot, assembilng a steering column is tricky, some parts are spring loaded and others only assemble in in the proper order, you got the steering column out, now you will need a tool to depress the lock plate, remove the c clip and the plate, then remove the signal arm and fourway button, remove the signal switch plate remember how everything came out,you should be able to remove the steerin shafe and get at the four bolts holding the tilt mechanism, four reverse torx bolts, reassemble and install, good luck

My 04' doge heavy duty left front headlight quit working. the bulb was not bad but i changed it anyway still does not work lamp out light stays lit. also when my tilt steering is at certain angles my...

obviously the wires between the steering column are worn and broken .replacement or fix is needed this is notorious with tilt wheel .
as you already noticed tilting the wheel causes one issue and or result and another position causes yet another result ......most likely cause resides within the turn signal lever itself ...either remove the bottom cover to the column and find what wire is doing what or i would suggest a replacement part is far more worthy in the end and try to not use the tilt as much it is a notorious to occur on any vehicle .
consider either after market or salvage yard .
