The fob will not start the car unless the button is being pushed so it is logical that the second fob that your are using that is doing the job
as to distance from the car talk with a service technician but the distance will be around 30 ft max
if the fob will not unlock the doors until you get close then that is an indication of the range of the fib

My 2006 volvo key wont unlock and car wont start but security light flashes

Locate your second key fob -
Try using that key fob -

if it does not work, and you can verify the Batteries in both Fob's are good - it could be a couple different things.

1. your security system control box may be 'bad'.
2. their is a 'ring' around the key area that are notorious for going bad and preventing the car from starting - however...they don't prevent the key fob from remotely opening the door locks.
3. The power feeding the security system is interrupted (blown fuse, etc) -

I would do the following:

1. Check the second fob and see if it works - If it does you have a bad #1 key fob (or battery).
2. Check ALL of the fuses (in the dashboard Drivers side access panel) AND under hood - Check even those not labeled security - as there are often fuses that feed more than one item, but are only labeled for one item.
3. Try going inside the car, shut all the doors, and lock/unlock the car five or six times using the interior control - I believe this is supposed to reset the unit.
I could be wrong - you can look this up. It might be that you have to do this with the key fob but I can't recall.

Give those things a shot. Also, make 100% sure all of the doors, hood, trunk, etc are fully closed.

I'd just about bet you have a bad key fob - finding #2 is the key here.

Beyond that - it's probably a trip to the junkyard for a new security module and matching set of key fobs - But long before getting involved in that - I'd bet you have a bad key fob or blown fuse -

Security Modules and key fob's are not universally replaceable, are extremely difficult to work with (for those without VIDA [Volvo Diagnostic software] and programming capabilities) and have to be programmed to work with the control unit to which assigned.

2005 Saab 9-3 Convertible randomly unlocks (mostly the trunk) with horn beeps. Key fob will not lock/unlock car (battery replaced). These might be separate issues.

If this only happens when the key fob is close enough for the car to "hear" the signals transmitted from it then chances are the fob is failing. The FOB will have to be taken apart, cleaned and inspected for contamination/corrosion/stress cracks.
If the car does this on it's own even when the FOB has no battery or is too far away to be heard, then the problem could be internal on the TWICE (Theft Warning Module) or a power lock switch.
Since you said the horn beeps I would say it is most likely a FOB inadvertently transmitting signals even when you're not pushing buttons. Repair or replace the fob and you should be okay.

Door unlock then locks itself

try the other fob.
the buttons on fobs can short.(its just a plastic membrane with carbon pad in the fob and can go bad.(cracks or crumbles inside...........)
so put the suspected fob far away from car, and use the good new fob. work now, and a new FOB battery, too.
if you only have one fob, now's the time to get the spare.
no fob lasts forever. not not ever.

Immobilizer not disarming

lost both FOBS?
be happy, mine i must keep 3 working.... or cant make my own.
rule 1, never have 1 fob. or get stranded, , you will.....
so does other fob work?

1: check all fuses. both boxes
2: use only the key fob, no other keys on ring, for the test.
3: use the 2nd fob same way , now. with other key far away.
4: make sure battery voltage is 12.6vdc, 10.7v the IMMO goes belly up. (any $10 voltmeter , works)

5: have only 1 fob (transponder-key) near the ignition.
6: do not have other keys near Ignition switch. even just plain keys.
watch out, some after market keys are transponsers but look plain.
I have one for my car. button less fob. very trim, but is transponder key.
7: for sure not other transonder keys from other "cars or anything"

The Lamp means, your transponder key is dead. or scrambled.
buy a new battery for fob. the operator guide tells you what to do.
lost that?
on mine i put in a fresh coin cell and bam, it works.

on newer jeeps, if the IMMO thinks your are hacking the system.
it bricks the IMMO for 24hours, sucks huh?
for example, using a key from another car , in some odd way.
or doing same and battery is weak or remove from under hood.
it thinks its being attacked,, and goes stupid for 24hrs.
i dont think yours has this, , but mine does.

How program the key remot

Keyfob remote reprogramming is not very difficult but on some cases it can be done by dealer service tools. If the remote s faulty then keyfob will not get programmed.Insert the key in ignition.Turn the key to on position, and cycle the key three times off-on-off-on-off-on.Then with the keyfob remote select your remote and then try to operate the vehicle with remote. These is just the basic procedure, but sometimes it will not help.
On that case dealer is the only option.

I'm looking to buy a 1994 Ford Taurus. The owners have 1 ignition key, but no door keys and no key fobs. How you loose these, I have no idea! How do I get replacement door keys and remotes? Are these...

Ford can cut a key with the vin#. As far as the fob, dealerships don't carry them any longer. If you can find one on eBay the dealership can reprogram it but most are too lazy and won't bother. Google "replacement key fobs", there are a few companies that sell
Replacements and can program them for you. Pep boys and auto zone also carry replacements but I'm not sure about the programing. Good luck.

Lotus elise 2005 fob and key does not work

Re-synchronize the FOB if the problem is with just one key.

1. Hold down both buttons simultaneously until the fob LED goes out. (10 seconds)

2. Release both buttons -- the LED should come on and stay on.

3. Press the larger fob button for a second, and the LED should flash.

IF re-synchronization doesn't work, you may have to replace the fob. Call customer service with your PIN (on the key-card that came with the keys). IF you don't have the PIN, then you need to call customeor service to confirm/register your ownership of the car.

If the keys are re-synchronized and it still doesn't work:

Re-program.

1. Re-synchronize as above, if you have not done so.

2. Turn the ignition on 3 times within 7 seconds. The red light above the odometer should light and stay on for 3 seconds.

3. Enter the PIN. Immediately after the red light goes out as per 2 above, switch on the ignition and count the number of flashes until it equals the number of the first digit on your PIN, then turn the ignition off, then on again. Do this for all four numbers.

4. What a pain, but if you get it wrong on a count, then you can restart by turning the ignition off for 10 seconds.

5. After the fourth digit, if the PIN is correct, the red light will stay on. Then you can re-test the fobs, and it should work.

Otherwise, call customer service.

Hope this helps.
