Unplug the fan on sensor. It should have one green wire and one black wire. Use a paper clip and jump the two wires. Turn the key to the run position, the engine does not need to be running. Does the fan come on? If not check the green wire for 12 volts and the black wire for ground. If there is no ground than run a new ground wire. If the is no power check the heater/air conditioning fuse in the under dash fuse block. If there is power and ground make sure both the cooling fan fuses are good and both the cooling fan relays are good. From what you're saying, it sounds like the lifters are tapping, almost like a clicking if i'm correct. Go to Advance Auto Parts, and buy some Seafoam in a can, you can pour some directly into your oil, and the noise should sieze. Also pour some in your gas, it really helps the engine. If you ask the cashier, they will take you right to it.

check your shift linkages if the bushing is worn out you may have problems shifting or it could be a bad transmission

Sounds like you have a manual transmission. The problem as described is more than likely a worn detent on the shift rail. This is a job for a gearbox specialist.
