1993 suburban is not starting and it is not the battery. What could it be?

IF BATTERY CABLES OLD THEY WILL CAUSE POOR GROUND HIGH RESISTANCE IN STARTER CIRCUIT CAUSING STARTER NOT TO CRANK ENGINE.CHECK TO SEE IF DASH LIGHTS AND GAUGES WORK WHEN YOU TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH IF NO CHECK IGNITION FUSES.IF FUSES OKAY IGNITION SWITCH IS OPEN NEED REPLACING.NOW IF BATTERY VOLTAGE IS 12.6 VOLTS, BATTERY CABLES GOOD AND IGNITION SWITCH AND FUSE OKAY. STARTER SOLENOID OR STARTER FAULTY.REMOVE STARTER TAKE TO ANY AUTO PARTS STORE THEY WILL TEST STARTER.TURN OFF RADIO BEFORE REMOVING NEGATIVE BATTERY SO YOU WONT LOCK OUT RADIO.

In order to get the radio out on a 2004 suburban, does the dash have to come apart or will the faceplate come off?

Put the parking brake on and shift transmission(so you can have the clearance to re move the bezel) into 1st gear and pull the bezel around the radio and gauge cluster. It should unsnap and remove it. The factory radio should now easily be removed by taking out the three screws(2 on left and 1 on right).

1993 Suburban 4 speed automatic transmission shifts hard front 1st to second. Transmission is 3 years old, 15,000 miles. It is a factory rebuilt.

That should be the L60-4 truck version
Have the sedan version, 93 Caprice.
That was the first year of the new electronic shifting transmission.
Especialy when cold she will shift hard, but it's normal.
But that depends on what you call normal.
I have gotten used to it over the last 17 years.
