Where is fuse for icm

I was told to check the fuse(s) that protect the ICM

you are right the green should be the hot wire or positive just check with a auto parts store to make sure but im almost certain you will be ok.

I don't know what the codes mean but do they go away if you put the old ecm back on it? I think you should check the ignition fuse first. It may be located under the hood but also under the dash in your regular fuse box. I have seen them in both places on various vehicles. If the fuse is good then continue on. Next what I would like you to try is get a hair dryer and run an extention cord to the truck. Take the distributer cap off and inside on top of the distributor is a half moon type plastic coded little box wraped half way around the center shaft. That is the ignition modulator.
I want you to heat it up as hot as you can get it without melting the plstic and then hurry and replace the cap as fast as you can. Get everything away from the fan and run and try to start it. If it sputters or maybe even starts for a few minutes that is the culprit. It may even keep runnng for a while but rest assured it is on the way out.
These things are gold when buying one new. If you want a good laugh then call the dealers and asked them what they want for one. besure you are sitting down when you do. The aoto parts stores want a couple hundred for them. One of the greatest rip offs in the auto industry was to replace this 2 dollar item and charge what they do in order to replace the 7 dollar set of points. I myself suggest you buy the entire distributar at the salvage yard. Choose a pick a part if you have one in your area. That is one that lets you remove the parts yourself and you get them cheaper. The distributor should be no more then 30 to 50 bucks. mine I could have gotten for 30 but they were out of my model and I didn't want to wait. The next place wanted 80 but I told them I had 50 and they let me have it. They won't sell you just the modulator. The distributar is worthless without it.
Just bring it home and replace that modulator with your and not the whole distributor. besure the piece you need is in the one you get at the wrecking yard. It is a high theft item and people steel them and sell them on ebay. About 100 bucks on ebay but you have to wait for shipping and taking a chance the guy won't send you the wrong one.

Could be one or several different things wrong, take you vehicle to your local Autozone or Advance Auto parts if one is available and have them do a scan to see what kind of codes you ECM migth be registering, the scan is free by the way. Good Luck.

Have you had a Tech 1 diagnostic tool check?You need to have this done to check for any fault codes..
If you can have this done and give me the codes I can then help you out more in depth to finding the problem.

CPS is 1990 name is NOW CMP
crank sensor is CKP
stop reading web sites on 1990 cars, they are gone .

2.2L is not at all like the Turbo with 4 cops and CMP real.

also , 303 means this.
1: bad engine, cyl 3. weak bad compression
2: bad spark.#3
3: bad injector #3 swap with 4, and see of failure follows to #4.

2.2 L ) L61 GM only.

let me read the SM service manual on your L61 engine GM.
a 2 wires CKP crank sensors, that must not be bad. or all spark ends, not just #3 ever. CKP goes only to ECM. so we skip this/


The ICM runs a super strange, Ignition coil 4 in 1.
ALL IN ONE COIL PACK, FIRES 1,3,4,2 AND VERY HARD TO TEST, IN A GIANT SANDWICH COIL PACK. (PAINFUL THIS)
the CAM sensor is part off the ICM.
(virualized synthetic)
THE STATEMENT BELOW NO MATTER HOW ODD IS HOW IT DOES A VIRTUAL CMP SENSOR.

"The ICM detects if cylinder?1 or cylinder?3 is on the compression stroke by sensing the secondary voltage and polarity of each side of the ignition coil. The higher voltage is on the compressing cylinder. This is called compression sense ignition. The ICM provides a synthesized cam signal to the ECM based on these inputs. The ECM uses the cam signal to synchronize fuel injection. This system consists of the following circuits:"

If the ECM receives an intermittent CMP signal from the ICM, DTC P0341 sets."

compression sense ignition.! <<<< learn this first
if compression is bad on #3 the ICM WILL BE CONFUSED
that is why techs, check compression first.
and no EFI on earth can run a dead engine(mech. hard failed)
for sure this one in SPADES.

most cars do not use. compression sense ignition.
and this car can not do CMP unless engine is good first. see how that matters here so much.

I have a 96 Chevy 1500 /vortec 350 . About 9 months ago I had to replace the coil and ignition module and it has never stopped throwing the 1351 code. What's wrong?

not told is engine misfiring still,? (besides DTC errors)

1996, 350V8 engine, 5.7L new name today.
C1500 right with C in front? not K1500>?
VIN R coded Automatic trans.
1351 (no front letter told) why post DTC lacking full and complete DTC????
answering for USA spec, cars only me.
i get only 1 hit

Trouble Code: P1351 (5.7L V8 VIN R Auto)
ICM Ignition Control Circuit High Input so after replacing the part
we reset all DTC errors using the scan tool (a button on it)
and drive and see if it comes back or otere pop up.
if does p1351 again,
the wiring is bad to it.
the SM states this

  • ICM control circuit is open, shorted to ground or shorted to B+
  • ICM power circuit is open (check power from the ECM1 fuse)
  • ICM is damaged or has failed
  • PCM has failed

bad grounds to all that.
the ICM step 4 in the manual told you the ICM must be mounted
not just nakked(sic) ever but with thermal compound.
like seen on computers today,(called heat sink grease (SLANG)
MUST, OR IT OVERHEATS, FOR SURE, LIKE CLOCK WORK
BEST IS NEW DISTRIBUTOR THIS OLD. IMO
AND ALL Wiring to to it clean and tight , no rust or bad connections.
even loose fuse or one that is damaged, ENG1 and ECU1.

I have a 1997 chevy lumina with 3.1 engine. im not getting 12volts on connestor a on the left side of icm i checked all fuses they look good.could it be the ecm or the ignition switch thanks.

1993 f150 no power to icm. Shut truck off to get fuel will not restart

The coil and the ICM both get power from a 30amp fuse which is powered from the key switch. Have you checked that circuit ? The wires are red and lite green.

99 blazer with 160,000 miles engine died while running on the freeway. Engine cranks, but will not start. Fuel pump was replaced @ 100,000 and I can hear it working. Is it typical for the coil to go...

No the coil wouldn't be the first place i would look This could olny be coused be total fuel shut down or total electrical failure at ignition.Check fuse #10 infuse box its the ecm ignitionpower main fuse this is cirrcut 439its a pink wire that runs to the the icm ignition cortrol module witch is bolted to the coil and has terminals A D B and C the coil has C A B With a mulitmeter check across on an ohms scale and the ignition on engne not running check A and B on the ICM you should have a connection them check between B and C you should have a connection if you do them check between D on the ICM and the coil main output wire on the you should have a connection with some restance if not try B on the coil and the main coil output wire you should have a connection with some restance If you have no connection on the ICM between A B or A C or B C then the ICM is bad if you have no connection between D on the ICM and B on the coil terminal or the coil main wire then the coil is bad I hope this didn't get to confuseing but if you follow it slowly you can diagnoss this

This sounds very much like the ICM is the culprit. This helped me once with the same problem: Disconnect battery and wait for a few minutes, then take the ICM out and the ICM-board out of the little cage and check for signs of moisture. If you find something, first clean the board carefully with circuit board cleaner. Then take a heat gun and treat the board with a lot of heat for a couple of minutes but be careful not to melt it Put everything back together, reconnect battery. If you're lucky the ICM starts working again.

Anyway for sure you should check the error codes with vida to see which modules also might be involved in the ICM shout down, could be the antenna/(radio) module too for example.
It's sometimes very strange what can help bringing faulty ICMs back to life. There is one magic trick I discovered that helped me last time and since then my radio never stopped working again: With the engine running pull the antenna fuse. Disconnect battery for 20 minutes. Put antenna fuse back, reconnect battery. Start engine and maybe your ICM is back to life.

How do you remove the ignition coil

Each ignition control module (ICM) has the following circuits:
An ignition 1 voltage circuit A chassis ground An ignition control circuit for each cylinder A low reference circuit
The PCM controls spark by pulsing the ignition control circuits to the ICM to trigger the coils and fire the spark plugs. The PCM and ICM are internally protected against shorts to power and ground on the ignition control circuits.

The spark plugs are connected to each coil by a short boot. The boot contains a spring that conducts the spark energy from the coil to the spark plug. The spark plugs are tipped with platinum for long wear and higher efficiency.

Removal & Installation
2.2L (L61) Engine
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the accelerator cable from the bracket.
  3. Remove the accelerator cable bracket bolt.
  4. Remove the accelerator cable bracket.
  5. Disconnect the ignition control module (ICM) harness connector.
  6. Remove the ICM retaining screws.
  7. Remove the ICM from the ignition coil housing.

To install:
  1. Install the ignition control module in the ignition coil housing.
  2. Install the ICM retaining screws. Tighten the retaining screws.
  3. Connect the ICM harness connector.
  4. Install the accelerator cable bracket.
  5. Install the accelerator cable bracket bolt. Tighten the retaining screws.
  6. Install the accelerator cable to the bracket.

2.2L (Ln2) Engine
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet from the air cleaner.
  2. Remove the ICM electrical connectors (1) and spark plug wires (2).
  3. Remove the ignition coils bolts (3).
  4. Remove the ignition coils and ICM assembly.
  5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accelerator cable from the hold down clip.
  3. Remove the cruise control cable, if applicable.
  4. Remove the bolt from the fuel line retaining clip.
  5. Disconnect the 11-pin harness connector for the ignition control module (ICM).
  6. Remove the bolts from the ignition coil and the ICM assembly-to-camshaft housing.
  7. Remove the ignition coil and ICM assembly from the engine.
  8. Remove the screws that retain the housing to the cover.
  9. Disconnect the coil harness connector from the ICM.
    CAUTION When removing the housing from the cover, make sure the ground strap stays in place.
  10. Remove the housing from the cover.
  11. Remove the screws that retain the ICM to the cover.
  12. Remove the ICM from the cover.

To install:

CAUTION DO NOT wipe grease from the module or coil if the same module is to be replaced. If a new module is to be installed, a package of silicone grease will be included with the module. Spread the grease on the metal face of the module and on the cover where the module seats. This grease is necessary for module cooling.
  1. Install the ICM to the cover.
  2. Install the screws that retain the ICM to the cover.
  3. Install the ground strap, if necessary.
  4. Connect the ignition coils connector to the ICM.
    CAUTION When installing the housing to the cover, make sure the ground strap stays in place.
  5. Install the housing to the cover.
  6. Install the screws that retain the housing to the cover.
  7. Install the spark plug boots and the retainers to the housing, if necessary.
  8. Install the ICM assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the spark boots to the spark plug terminals.
    CAUTION The ICM cover bolts must be installed using isolator washers with the rubber side facing down.
  9. Install the bolts that retain the ICM assembly to the camshaft housing after coating the bolt threads with LOCTITE, or equivalent. Tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  10. Connect the ICM 11 pin harness connector.
  11. Install the bolt to the fuel line retainer clip.
  12. Install the accelerator cable into the hold down clip.
  13. Install the cruise control cable, if applicable. Connect the negative battery cable.
