Yes a timing belt could cause this. Ususally if the timing belt breaks/slips the engine will have a different sound while cranking it over to try to start it. Does it sound different? Also, if possable remove the cam position senser and look at the tone wheel that the senser reads and have someone crank the engine to see if the tone wheel turns, if not the timing belt is most likely the problem. I have seen a few tone wheels have problems but it is not common. What engine do you have?

yes it sounds deff and when I had the cam sensor out and the tone wheel was not turning it is a 2.4 dohc
I have the 2.4 D O H C and yes it sounds deff and that tone wheel don't turn so will replacing the timeing belt fix it are did it damage the engine
