THE VERY FIRST THING U DO WHEN U HAVE A LIGHT IS SEE WHAT TROUBLE CODES ARE STORED FOR THAT LIGHT

On this year of Malibu, it may be nearly impossible for you to check the ATF yourself.  The dealer has special tools to check the ATF, as it's located at the very rear of the engine compartment on some models.  One tip though - make sure you are watching when they check it, as some technicians are lazy and don't want to do this (engine is quite hot! :)

The engine light is telling you, you have a transmission problem which sound like a shift solenoid. If you take the care to a local garage or dealer you can have them scan the vehicle for the problem code, which will tell you which solenoid is bad.

Engine light goes on and my transmission starts acting up chevy malibu 1998

Input shaft speed sensor or out put speed sensor . Have the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . This would probably point you in a diagnostic direction .

My '99 Malibu is shifting hard when it starts to get warm. I've taken to a tranny shop and they couldn't find anything wrong. someone mentioned about the motor mounts? how serious is this? and will it...

the shift linkage to transmission may be out of adjustment. on the chevy malibus the tps ( throttle position sensor ) has a big effect on how tranny shifts. check tps first. it is on side of throttle body, at the throttle plate.

This is a (o2 I think) sensor on top of the engine, right hand side. I had my car worked on and this happened when I picked it up. The repairman had unplugged it and when it was plugged back in, it worked fine.

Shifts hard from park to drive and engine moves

That would be the transmission and motor mounts. Take it to a auto repair facility.
