2000 mazda 626 5 speed manual transmission is stuck in a gear and won't shift out

A clutch problem will not interfere with gear selection when the engine is off and the car stationary. It does seem like you have a gearbox or gear linkage trouble.

I just did a tune up on a 2000 mazda 626 with a V6. the parts changed were the plugs, ignition coil, plug wires, mass air flow censor, air filter, and fuel injector cleaner. the plugs were gapped at .3

9 times out of 10 your problem is going to to be with the MAF Sensor. You changed it, was the old one bad? If not try putting the old one back in. If you bought an aftermarket MAF and didn't replace with an OEM MAF, that could also be your problem. Recheck to make sure it's seated correctly, check the wire connection. Unless the stickers have been removed, you should have a vacuum line diagram under your hood. Here are what you should check from top to bottom.
  • A clogged, stuck, or leaking fuel injector
  • Faulty fuel regulator
  • Dirty or faulty mass air flow sensor
  • Faulty coolant temperature sensor
  • Faulty thermostat
  • ECM needs reprogramming
  • Dirty or faulty oxygen sensor
  • Vacuum leak
  • Fuel delivery problem
  • Incorrect fuel pressure

Check engine light

Not unusual. The CEL is there to tell you that the onboard computer has detected an anomaly (or more), and has stored a code in its memory to assist in determining the failure. You need an OBD-II code reader to retrieve the codes from the computer and take whatever corrective action is recommended based upon the code(s) found.

Engine shudders and dies trying to go from a red light

The engine has an electronic module where the spark plug wires connect to. Replace this and you will see the difference. Once this module heats up it will malfunction. After cooling down the car will start up again. hope this helps.

Sixteen year old car with only 40K miles must not be driven often, or sat for some time. I would suspect fuel system issue, such as bad pump, clogged filter, bad regulator or faulty injectors. Start by testing fuel pressure.
