The flywheel could be bad. The flywheel is so big that it will only grind the teeth every so often when it is in that spot. If you are sure that the starter is bad, replace it. If you do need to replace your starter this site looks like it has cheap prices, free shipping and great reviews http://www.buyautoparts.com/starter.htm

SOURCE: 2000 Ford Expedition wont start

On the engine there is a tube that supplies fuel to the fuel injectors, on that tube there is a valve, like a metal tire valve, this is the fuel pressure test port, you will need a special guage to check the pressure that screws onto that valve, Kragen and other parts stores sell this test kit, it is very inexpensive, about $20.00, but cheaper than having a shop do it for you, if you do the test and you have no pressure while cranking the engine then your fuel pump is bad, the pump is in the gas tank, a big job and dangerous due to chance of fire if you are not cautious.

SOURCE: 2000 ford explorer 4.0 x-engine is stalling, missing and lose power while driving

I personally would check the fuel pressure. Then I would go back to the coil. I have seen brand new bad coils out of the box. The symptoms of a loss of power point to this component, especially if the car idles well, but loses power when accelerating. Please do not rate this reply - we all are left to grasp at straws since you have changed pretty much everything. Good Luck. Please post the final fix of the problem.

SOURCE: problem with ignition switch, starter, flywheel

that sounds correct what happens is the starter still tries to engage the flywheel and grinds the teeth off both. Replace switch then worry about starter flywheel if it starts fine don't worry about it you may have saved it if you didn't let it run that way long

SOURCE: new starter and battery and still won't start

Could be voltage regulator or starter relay has also gone bad. Seems to be fairly common in the Bauer editions.

SOURCE: how do I remove and fix a starter on a hyundai 1997 accent

maybe you should weigh your options cause probably cheaper to replace that rebuild disconect bat before you remove starter take all wires loose remembering where they go dont mix up and remove 2 or 3 bolts that hold the starter in place then remove and replace in reverse order

If its a grinding noise, it could be the starter or the flywheel gear.

The starter is going bad, replace this ASAP as it may ruin the teeth on the flywheel which would be costly = the transmission has to be removed to replace.

Cherokee intermitant grinding noise in neutral

Is it when the engine first starts? It sounds like to me that the starter is getting stuck in the fly wheel. what happens is when you go to start it, the solenoid push's the gear out and spins the gear almost one full action, the grinding noise could be the starter staying engaged after the motor has starter but quickly comes out of it after driving out of it. just a thought.
