Hyundai Lantra gearbox problems

My wife's 1996 (1995 oversea model) lantra 1.6 auto gearbox is playing up, it felt like the bands where slipping, but now all of a sudden has lost reverse gear and slips in and out of drive, when in forward gear.

I thought it may be the bands but on doing some research have found that it possibly could be some oring seals?

As technical manuals for cars in New Zealand do not have sections that cover auto gearboxs was wondering if someone had the relevent infomation that they could send me please.

The lantra gearbox is a Mitsubishi unit and i think it does not have bands just clutches.

Hyundai Lantra 1994

After some extensive research, it looks as though they have two totally different body styles as well as a few others. The differences are as follows:

Lantra: 1.5L
Elantra: 1.6L or 1.8L engine sizes

Lantra: 2,336 lbs
Elantra: 2,500lbs Weight

Lantra: 11.89 gal
Elantra: 13.7 gal fuel capacity

those are only three differences that i have put up among the many that i have found. Lantra's also seem to be one of those out of states type cars that you find in Australia mostly. The body is also totally different.

Reverse gear almost dead in 1998 Lantra auto..

You have a bad O-ring seal in the valve body of your transmission. The reason you barely move when you rev high, is because the trans fluid isnt going to the correct part of the valve body due to the bad seal. This should be a repair you can do yourself if you have any mechanical experience, OR a transmission shop may be able to rebuild the valve body for you.
