Clanking like sound in the front end that sounds like either the drive shaft or the gears in the transfer case? Hard to hear unless pulling in the garage where the sound bonces off the walls. The clank happens, I am guessing about 8-12 times per wheel rotation. definitely sounds like a rotating related clank (i.e not the brakes, etc.)

First of all you need to be more specific-- Is this a car, truck,or whatever. Is it front wheel drive? Is it four wheel drive? (Sounds like a four wheel drive) Basically we need to know exactly what type of vehicle you have. As far as the noise you hear, it could be any number of things-- such as bearings. cv joints, universal joints, and so on. Once we know what vehicle you have It will definately help us narrow down the problem. Ed

Sorry but I just found out that you have a 2002 GMC Sierra --- Anyway is full time or part time 4 wheel drive? Do you notice what side the noise is coming from? Or is from underneath the vehicle? My suggestion would be to jack up one wheel (front) at a time and rotate the wheel. Do you hear any noise or is there excessive drag when the wheel is rotated? If you you do this to both wheels and find out that they are rotating well then we will take it to the next step. Most of these newer vehicles have the wheel bearings together with the hub assembl;y. that is usually what goes bad. They are not cheap--- roughly 150.00 I have not changed one in a couple of years----but for the average joe it can be difficult. So try jacking up the wheel and rotating it first before you do anything else. This as should take alot of the guesswork out of it. Ed

2002 dodge dakota AWD 4x4 4.7 automatic will not pull in any gear when in awd but I can put it in 4hi or 4lo and it will pull with front tires

Sounds like something is really messed up in the transfer case. First check that the rear driveshaft is intact and fully connected to the transfer case. If so, the transfer case needs to be repaired/replaced.
In 4hi or 4lo, the front/rear 'differential' is locked, so both front and rear driveshafts should receive power. In AWD, the power is supposed to be divided between front and rear driveshafts, but will allow power to go to the shaft with the least resistance (like non-positraction rear end will allow the tire with the least resistance to get all the power). If the rear output shaft is broken, or the rear drive shaft is broken, all the power is going nowhere in the transfer case.

How to change the front differential on my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4 wheel drive.

Unless you are a seasoned mechanic with a lot of tools and a lift, take it to the shop. This swap is like a caesarian section on your truck. All kinds of things have to come loose, like axle shafts and crossmembers and hubs and such. Not something to learn how to do.

Rolling, clanking sound from transmission when put into gear; goes away at road speed.

Sounds like a defective tranny shaft bearing. Remove it from the car and tear it down for inspection.

GMC '91 Jimmy, Transfer case. When in two wheel drive I hear a slight grinding noise and rattling noise. When in 4 wheel no noise. 330,000 miles, could something be worn? What keeps the transfer case gear...

Remove the transfer case and strip it down, wash it out and replace whatever is worn.
330,000 miles is unrealistic
Your chain is worn and stretched for sure, and rattling and may be cutting into the case.
Don't install another salvage yard unit, unless you can not repair yours. Then strip down whatever you purchase, and go thru it also.

Whenn in 4 wheel drive it makes a crunching noise is it the U joints or cvjoints in the driveshaft ?

No,it's not either. I wouldn't recommend driving the jeep in 4wd until
you get this resolved, unless you want to spend big money on a new
tranfer case? The transfer case gears are not lining up properly, due to
either the shifter linkage not properly adjusted, or the transfer case is
shot, gear wise.U joints and cv joints(constant velocity) don't make
crunching noises like your explaining when bad. U joints usually just
drop the drive shaft when bad and you will go nowhere. CV's make a
clanking, rapping, or grinbding sound when bad. Good luck. Get it
to someone who can diagnose the issue , before you wreck the transfer
case, immediately.Good Luck.

Loud knocking sound from front drive axle side

I really doubt that its the spider gears that are bad. Most likely that its the axle shaft- not as bad as it sounds- I sell lots of them.

Grinding when put into gear

The 4L60E trans is notorious for trouble. Be sure to drop the pan and look in there for problems - like excessive metal.
