How to change coils on 2003 expedition

Took car to mechanic due to check engine light said it was a mis- fire and needs a tune up. they did the tune up and put a new intake system. A week later the check engine light is on again with the same original problems rough idling and no power when going up hills. Mechanic said it was bad coils which are not part of the tune up. I paid him $1000 to fix my car and if I can do this on my own and save some more $ then I need to know how to replace the coil pack . Thanks

Please tell me in this tune up you had new spark plugs put in? if check engine light is on there are some stored codes those will give you the suspect cylinder(s) check to see if you have plug wires if not there will be a coil for each cyl. pass. side of motor starting in the front working to the back or firewall cyls are 1,2,3,4 driver side same front to back 5,6,7,8 codes will be PO301 cyl 1. PO302 cyl 2. etc. get the code find the correct cyl. unplug little connector u will need a 7mm socket to remove the bolt holding the coil in place then pull up on the coil and boot.... if u have plug wires get the code find correct cyl and follow plug wire to coil pack in front of engine there will be two one on each side in front of engine...

SOURCE: 96 Ford Windstar runs rough, check engine light on

Sounds like you have some EGR ports clogged up, remove the intake and look at the egr ports all but
#1 cyl port will probably be at least partially clogged, hope this helps

SOURCE: My 1999 Expedition shakes and runs rough.

you need to remember that Autozone is good for the checking of codes for free,But they are not mechanics!,
there is no code that says replace the plugs and wires,
and there is no code that says replace any coil

SOURCE: ENGINE IDLES ROUGH IVE CHANGED PLUGS WIRES COIL

You might want to look at that injector for that cylinder.I worked on a GMC Jimmy that did the same thing and I also changed all the sensors come to find out that my injectors and the spider assembly needed to be changed.

Has it had a tune-up yet? (New spark plugs) If not, you're due. Also, have the shop test your coil packs - a very common problem with the Expeditions. I had my plugs replaced and No. 2 coil pack replaced recently for around $340. I'm a handyman, but would never attempt to change the plugs on mine myself - too much could go wrong- breaking a plug off, special tools, etc.
This should fix your problem.

Replaced the MAF sensor - nothing. Took it to a authorized toyota shop & checked compression which check out good and put the computer on. Computer read mis-fire on cylinder 1, and then multiple misfire (like it would jump around). We went ahead and replaced the fuel injector on cylnder 1 - did not solve problem as when we hook the computer up, misfire seemed tp stay at idle and seem better when running high RMP, but check engine light is on as it never went away. Went ahead and replaced the coil pack to cylinder 1 - nothing. what am i missing?

3.4 GM v6. dead skip on #4 cyl. Spark plug ok, wire ok, replaced injector. Still dead skip. Found cyl. by disconecting wires to injectors. #4 not affected.

The very first thing that you should do after finding a cylinder mis-fire that can not be easily explained such as a fouled spark plug, is to take a compression test especially of the mis-firing cylinder to be certain that the mis-fire is not caused by a mechanical problem, and I have seen people spend a lot of time and money trying to hunt down an electrical problem when the actual problem was a mechanical one, and no electronic part will repair a burnt or bent intake or exhaust valve.

Oil around spark plug and car mis fires

The oil around the plug may be a sign that the valve-cover needs a new gasket. Oil on the plugs can cause a misfire but it is important that you check everything over. The misfire could be due to defective wires, boots, coils, spark-plug/s, injector/s, and so much more. Take a look at the cars maintenance history, Maybe it is over due for a complete tune-up or oil change. The car is 11years old, how many miles are on it? How was it running before this?

My 2003 Ford Expedition runs rough at idle and the service light started blinking.

it sounds like you need to tune up your vehicle. whenever the service light blinks it usually means you have a miss fire. You can take it to auto Zone to retrieve the code. The code should tell you what cylinder is miss firing.Hope this helps. Please leave comment.

Number five mis-fire!

check plugs/wires or coil packs. for irregular wear or burn marks. TRy some fuel treatment just in case it is a injector issue.

Engine has miss-fire

First check spark plugs/wires/distributor cap (tune up). Also would be good idea to use fuel injector cleane and change fuel filter and O2 sensor.
Hope that helps
