Full reservoir, high temps.

1995 Old Silhouette. Temp gauge shoots to high after about 2 miles, then back to regular levels. Low coolant light is on, but overflow tank is full. No visible leaks. New head gasket, water pump, and thermostat within the past 2 years. Also, the bleeder screw head near the water pump is broken off. Any other suggestions on a fix, and is there another way to bleed the line near the pump?

The heater core could be clogged. If your antifreeze is orange , then it is Dexcool antifreeze which causes slime and sludge to build up in the cooling system. It can clog a heater core. My suggestion would be to drain and flush the entire cooling system with Prestone Super Flush. Put in a new thermostat while your at it. Refill the cooling system with a green antifreeze that is labeled compatible with aluminum engine parts and radiators.Do Not refill with Dexcool antifreeze.

One guess is there is air in the cooling system. The air pockets will cause temporary overheating (fluctuating guage).

It sounds like a bad head gasket is creating these air pockets.

when engine is cold remove radiator cap and check coolant level, sounds like it is really low and has an air pocket in it.

Hi Tammie, Is the coolant level low ? If not , The engine coolant level switch grounds the indicator with the coolant level in the coolant reservoir below the minimum recommended level. The engine coolant level indicator module is on the right side of the radiator just down below from the radiator cap !

My heater is blowing cold air and the temp gauge is rising; do I need a new heater or is it something else? I regulary put in fuel injector cleaner every 3000 miles. When I searched for Heater Cores it...

it sounds like you are running out of coolant. refill and check for leaks. The coolant reservoir may have a leak. Your thermostat may need replacement.

I have a 2000 silhouette. the coolant level low light keeps coming on even though coolant has been added. after about 10 minutes of idling the temp rises to just below h.but temp is fine while driving....

Bleed the air out of the coolant system, and add more coolant,to radiator, and reservoir, and make sure the cooling fans are coming on,if the low coolant light stays on,remove the low coolant light sensor, and clean it off,it is located on passengers side in the radiator,it has a wire clip you have to remove, and dont loose it,after cleaning it,put the clip back on the sensor, and push the sensor back in the hole.

Temp gauge/Tach gauge question

Make sure your battery is charged fully and the terminals are very clean. Get a free stress test at a parts store. If you have a charger, connect it up and see if that solves the problem. Voltage levels that might allow the car to start and run fine may be low enough to cause electronics problems with radios, gauges and locking mechanisms.

The wiper switch is most likely bad. Check the coolant level for the temp. issue. Low coolant will cause a gauge to shoot up suddenly
