P0430 code I have a p0430 and 0420 catalyst system inefficient bank 1 and 2. This is a 2.7 v6 it has two catalytic coverters banks 1 and 2. I just replaced the spark plugs it that seemed to smooth the engine out for a few days done last weekend. I have not done the o2 sensors yet. Seems odd both cats go at the same time. I have had some issues with sounds like valve chatter and voltage fluctuations (new alternator but voltage drops intermittantly causing radio to reset at same time engine seems to stumble very briefly mainly happens when braking hard) not sure what is causing what here. was able to clear the code and it was clear for most of the week, came back today. seems to run better when clear. thanks

Hi there:

DTC P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
DTC P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

Could be some electrical problem, check wires and harnesses connections (cleaning job); also check description and testing HERE.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Might be going super simple here but from what you have said have you checked the wiring on your sensors? If you know that one works and you swap it and its not working its very possible the wires farther up are shorted or burned somewhere.

SOURCE: engine light on code po141 oxygen sens bank 1 sens 2

bank 1 will be whichever side cylinder 1 of your engine is and bank 2 will be the opposite side. It's named bank 1 and bank 2 so that no matter how the engine is laid out, bank 1 is always on the same side as cylinder 1. I cannot say whether the right hand or the left hand one will be bank 1 as I do not know where your cylinder 1 is. The garage should know

SOURCE: Can not start 2000 Kia Sportage with 161 K Miles.

It sounds like the timing is not set correctly. When you installed the timing belt, there are two dots on the crank shaft and cam shaft sprockets - these two dots need to line up as close to eachother as possible. This is done by putting the belt on the two sprockets while both dots face eachother - lay them down on a table or flat (clean) surface with both dots facing eachother (crank shaft sprocket dot should be facing up, and cam shaft sprocket dot should be facing down) - carefully insert the sprockets onto the cam shaft and crankshaft simultaneously - this usually takes some finess and patients - once they are in place and you are confident they are lined up, you can put the coverback on. Also, make sure (first) that the number one cylinder is at TDC (top dead center, or in the "up" position. Pull the #1 plug out, manually crank the engine over or "kick" the engine over with the ignition (have someone do it for you). You can use a small screwdriver, inserting into the plug hole (not all the way) and when you see it pop up, poke it in again to feel the piston is at it's maximum height (if you hold the screwdriver on the cylinder and feel the screwdriver / piston go down, bring it back up again.
With it at top dead center, and the two dots facing eachother, put everything back together. Make sure all gaskets are not "bulging" out of the cover. (if applicable) .
If this is all done correctly, the car should start with no problem.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

SOURCE: I have a 2004 Spectra.

Well, it is either a timing belt/chain going out or a bad crank position sensor most likely causing the other problems. The O2 sensor may be bad as well but that usually doesn't cause the Misfire. The vehicle on board computer is confused, that is why it is throwing all those codes. and why it gives you that 1166 code which isn't defined. Check the crank position sensor and the timing and timing belt first. Once you have that fixed the rest should clear up.

bank 1 means , that bank that contains cylinder #1
where is cylinder #1 it on all V engines, that cylinder that is MOST forward.
all cyl 1 are offset front

never post about cars and no year or engine told or post #8th digit of VIN this is engine code, so answer and be correct. (USA answer me only)

06 Cadillac STS V8 car has codes P0174 and P0420.

• DTC P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1
• DTC P0174 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2
.
The engine control module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open and Closed Loop. During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without oxygen sensor (O2S) input. During Closed Loop, the O2S inputs are added and used by the ECM to calculate short and long term fuel trim (FT) fuel delivery adjustments. If the O2S indicates a lean condition, FT values will be above 0 percent. If the O2S indicate a rich condition, FT values will be below 0 percent. Short term FT values change rapidly in response to the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage signals. Long term FT makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. If the ECM detects an excessively lean condition, DTC P0171 or P0174 sets.
Diagnostic Aids
• Excessive resistance in the fuel injector ignition 1 voltage circuit or the fuel injector control circuit may cause the following symptoms:
- Lean condition
- Misfire
- Rough idle
• The system will go lean if an injector is not suppling enough fuel.
• A lean condition could be present during high fuel demand.
• A malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause this DTC to set. Refer to DTC P0101 .
• Review the Failure Records with a scan. If an intermittent condition is suspected, refer to Intermittent Conditions .

DTC Descriptors
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTCs:
• DTC P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1
• DTC P0430 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 2

This code could mean the catalytic converter on that bank has failed .

Code p0430 on a 99 Silverado 5.3L 4WD

That is a Bank 2 Catalyst inefficiency code. Typically it is the catalytic converter that has failed. Bank 1 would be the same side of the engine as the number 1 cylinder, Bank 2 is the opposite side of the engine.

Typically a scan tool is used to monitor the downstream (after the catalytic converter) O2 sensors as well as other data like fuel trims. Compare both downstream O2 sensors to see if the are reacting the same. Typically they will hold steady at idle. If bank 2 is switching from high to low voltage (similar to the upstream O2 sensors) than the catalytic converter is usually the culprit.

If you can post the year, make, model, and engine size I may be able to help you further.

Engine Code PO430

P0430 Ford - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2

Possible causes - Three way catalyst converter Bank 2
- Exhaust tube
- Intake air leaks
- Fuel injectors may be faulty
- Fuel injector leaks
- Spark plugs may be faulty
- Improper ignition timing
- Engine Control Module (ECM) Tech notes As the code description implies the P0430 code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P0430 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

I have a code P0430 on a Lincoln after changings all coils on a 2004 Lincoln V6, what caused and How do I fix it?

P0430 is Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2).

A code P0430 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • The catalytic converter is no longer functioning properly
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • There is an exhaust leak

First, inspect for exhaust leaks.

Next step is to measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 2. In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen sensor while you're at it.
