I have a 5 speed transmission and my clutch neutral safety switch is going out. can I bypass this switch

  • Anonymous Jun 23, 2012

maybe it's not going bad. there are times when I have to push the clutch in 4 or 5 times before it engages and the car starts.

Well to clear things up, its not a "neutral safety switch", manual vehicles have a clutch safety switch!
And yes you can bypass it, follow the clutch pedal up behind the dash, you'll find the switch. pull the plug and "short" the two connections(of the plug) with a piece of wire.

What makes you say it is "going" bad? Just curious, normally it'll just stop working!

Testimonial: "Thank you for the help Mark. I was told that I could bypass it but nobody told me where it was. The reason that I think it is going bad is because I have to engage the clutch 4 or 4 times before the car will start"

SOURCE: neutral safety switch 1991 camry 4 cyl

Well, not necessarily need a professional if you have some basic maintenance experience.

If you look at the engine compartment from the front of the car, the switch is located at right side, very close to the radiator, close to the bottom of the car. You will see the shifting cable as well as an electronic connector on it. You can try if you shift, the cable will rotate the arm on the switch.

According to my experience, it's not easy for the switch to go bad, it may just need some alignment so the switch angle is zeroed in wrt the contact points. There is a line on the switch for alignment purpose.

To replace it is not difficult at all, once you located it, you will see. You can get a used one at junk yard, I believe it will be much much cheaper.

SOURCE: Where is the clutch safety switch located in a car and what is it connected to?Where is the clutch safety switch located in a car and what is it connected to?Where is the clutch safety switch located

The clutch start switch in a Camry is normally on the floorboard in front of the clutch pedal lever. It can sometimes be mounted on the clutch lever pivot point.

It is connected into the starter motor circuit, as shown here

98 E350 Custom Cutaway 4r100 swap ZF5 S5-47 Speed Sensor / Electrical Advice?

Hi Scott! Switching out the 4R100 transmission to an S5-47 in your 1998 E350 Custom Cutaway is a significant modification. Regarding your questions about the speed sensor and electrical bypassing/routing, here's some information that may help:
  1. Speed Sensor: In most vehicles, the speed sensor is located on the transmission output shaft or the rear differential. However, the specific location can vary depending on the vehicle model and configuration. Since the S5-47 manual transmission does not have a speed sensor on the housing, you may need to install a different type of speed sensor or modify the existing setup.
    • Option 1: Use a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) adapter: There are aftermarket adapters available that can convert the mechanical speedometer drive to an electronic signal compatible with the vehicle's speedometer and other systems.
    • Option 2: Use a GPS speedometer: Another option is to install a GPS-based speedometer, which calculates the vehicle's speed using GPS signals.
It's important to consult with a qualified mechanic or transmission specialist who has experience with this type of conversion to determine the best approach for your specific vehicle.
  2. Electrical Bypassing/Routing: When converting from an automatic transmission to a manual transmission, there may be electrical components and wiring that need to be bypassed or rerouted. Here are some general considerations:
    • Transmission control module (TCM): The TCM used with the 4R100 will no longer be needed with the manual transmission. You may need to disconnect or bypass the TCM wiring.
    • Neutral safety switch: The automatic transmission has a neutral safety switch that prevents the vehicle from starting unless it's in Park or Neutral. You will need to ensure the manual transmission setup includes a similar safety feature.
    • Reverse lights: The automatic transmission has a reverse light switch that activates the reverse lights when the transmission is in reverse gear. You will need to ensure the manual transmission setup includes a compatible reverse light switch.
It's crucial to carefully review the vehicle's wiring diagrams and consult with a knowledgeable professional or an automotive electrician to properly handle the electrical bypassing and routing during the conversion.
Overall, performing a transmission swap and associated electrical modifications requires expertise and experience. It's recommended to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic or transmission specialist who can provide guidance specific to your vehicle and ensure the conversion is done correctly and safely.

I don't think that remote start well work on manual transmissions
the clutch has to be pushed in . because there's a neutral safety switch in the vehicle from the factory. I know that Dodge and Hyundai and GM will not start unless the pedal is pushed down. They well have to bypass the neutral safety switch and it's kind of against the law the switch is there on automatic and manual transmissions so that they cant be started unless you have a foot on the brake and one on the clutch. We at the dealerships where I qorked absullty could not disarm the safety switches

Neutral safety switch location

If you have a 5-speed manual transmission, you're probably looking for the clutch safety switch, which is located on the clutch pedal under the dash near the firewall, rather than the neutral safety switch, which is on the left side of automatic transmissions. Out of curiosity, why do you believe that it needs to be serviced?

I changed the motor and transmission from one to the other .I went from and automatic to a 5 speed manual changed motor harness now the car will not start turn key and nothing new battiery can you give me...

If you swapped out the auto for a manual trans the car might have a neutral start safety switch preventing the starter from engaging. This would not be something you would have on a manual transmission. Instead the manual would have the Clutch Safety switch which will only allow the starter to engage if the clutch is pressed in. On an automatic it won't allow the engine to turn over unless it's in Park or Neutral. I would locate the plug for the neutral start safety switch for the old automatic transmission and bypass it.
