SOURCE: 2001 Ford Ranger V6 timing chain

Hello;
The Ford motors are pretty good. I had 280K on a 2.9 V-8 that only needed the oil changed every 3K. Unless you have fluctuatuation in the timing then you should be ok.
These engines use a chain rather than a belt and have excellent life.
Thanks;

SOURCE: remove and replace 1984 ford f250 460 water pump

Water pump

Disconnect the battery ground.

  1. Drain the cooling system.
CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. Remove the bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator, if so equipped, and position the shroud over the fan. Remove the fan assembly.
  2. Remove the fan shroud. Remove the accessory drive belts and water pump pulley. Remove the alternator and brackets. Remove the compressor and bracket and lay it aside. DO NOT disconnect the refrigerant lines! Remove the power steering pump and brackets. Lay it aside. DO NOT disconnect the fluid lines! Disconnect the heater hose and lower radiator hose from the pump. Remove the bolts securing the water pump to the engine and lift off the water pump. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces thoroughly.
    To install:

Install the water pump in the reverse order of removal, using a new gasket coated with sealer. Torque the bolts to 12-18 ft. lbs.

Install all remaining parts in reverse order. Fill the cooling system, start the engine and check for leaks.

TIMMING CHAIN

  1. Remove the front cover.
  2. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to take up the slack on the left side of the chain. establish a reference point on the cylinder block and measure from this point to the chain.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft in the opposite direction to take up the slack on the right side of the chain.
  4. Force the left side of the chain out with your fingers and measure the distance between the reference point and the chain. The timing chain deflection is the difference between the two measurements. If the deflection exceeds 1 / 2 inch; (13mm), replace the timing chain and sprockets.

To replace the timing chain and sprockets:
  1. Turn the crankshaft until the timing marks on the sprockets are aligned vertically.
  2. Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining screw and remove the fuel pump eccentric and washers.
  3. Alternately slide both of the sprockets and timing chain off the crankshaft and camshaft until free of the engine.
  4. Position the timing chain on the sprockets so that the timing marks on the sprockets are aligned vertically. Alternately slide the sprockets and chain onto the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
  5. Install the fuel pump eccentric washers and attaching bolt on the camshaft sprocket. Tighten to 40-45 ft. lbs.
  6. Install the front cover.

I need to replace the timing CHAIN on a 1995 ford FALCON EF how much will it cost for the kit

The 95 Ford Falcon was a vehicle not available in the states however, Ford still used engines found in Ford explorers. If you are repairing this State-Side, go to your local auto parts store, and have them get a timing chain kit for a 95 Ford Explorer. The entire Kit will run you close to $20 USD. This is strictly for the chain itself. Usually if you are digging in this deep, you will want to replace the water pump, belts, and change oil. This of course adds to the price.

1999 ford expedition - needs a timing belt, but mechanics keep telling me that it has a chain and not a belt. I just need it done and want to know stuff like - how much time it takes, how much it cost's,...

No engine used in the Expedition has a timing belt, they all have timing chains, timing chains never have to be replaced unless they fail or the engine is being rebuilt. On this engine replacing the timing chains for each of the two camshafts (2) cost about $500.00

My timing chain is bad

As timing chain accumulate mileage, chain stretch, sprockets wear out and set the valves off timing. Most chains go up to 100000 miles or more, but not always. As a rule when there is more than about half inch of play between the gears on a V6 or V8, it is the time for a new timing chain and sprockets.
It is unusual for a timing chain to accumulate 200000miles, but I remember a car, with broken timing chain with only 160000miles on it.
Signs of worn out timing chains are:
Rough idle.
Sluggish performance and poor economy.
Sudden engine performance change including the inability to start the engine.
Intermittent backfire through the intake manifold.
Inconsistent ignition timing or a clattering noise coming from the front of the engine.
It is a good idea to replace the water pump (coolant pump), and the thermostat while replacing the timing chain.
The cost of the replace of timing chain is at least +$1300, but if is to bad, we pull out engine and replace both guides. In this case might cost more.
Please do not be mad with me. I'm a certified dealer, and I'm trying to give you the necessary information to help you to deal with the problem.

Does the 2000 Ford explorer have a timing Chain or belt? and what mileage do you replace?

It's a timing chain... They will probably last for as long as the vehicle does (175k-200k miles depending on upkeep and willingness to keep the dog alive). That said, if there's a reason to have the timing chain cover off an engine over 100k... I'm the type that would go ahead and replace the timing chain while it's in front of you if you plan on having the vehicle for more than a year or so.

If you have the engine pulled for any reason over 100k, then that's another time that I'd be replacing the timing chain and the oil pump while I'm at it...
