This could be lots and lots of different things but most likely is the bearings in the top of the suspension tower. You need to jack the wheel up and turn the wheel left and right to check, also grab the strut and wiggle it back and forward.
If there is movement or noticeable noise coming from top of strut then you need to replace the suspension strut top hat complete with the bearing in it.

Thank you, that is what I was hoping might be the problem, I've tried turning up the music but feel a mechanical inspection is now due.

    Thanks for your help

SOURCE: bmw 316 ABS light stays on

Your ABS systems use a combination of electronic and hydraulic systems to modulate the brakes individually to prevent them from locking up. Antilock systems consist of wheel speed sensors, a hydraulic control unit (HCU), and an electronic control unit (ECU). Because of how complex the system is your computer does a self-test. If the check is successful, the ANTILOCK and BRAKE lights will go out within a few seconds. If one or more of the component of the ABS system fails to pass one or both lights will remain lit, the system will shut down and set a code. The code itself does not tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on.

Please let me know if this information is helpful. Positive feedback is appreciated. Thank You!

Where can i find the timing mark for a 1996 bmw 316

Hi, to set the timing you should turn the No.1 piston to TDC, then turn the cam to where both valves on No.1 are close. The timing mark on the sproket should now be in line with the mark on the cilinder head. With No. 1 still on TDC fit the chain.
After fitting turn the engin a few times by hand to make sure there's not a valve pushing against a piston.

The fuel filter is generally in the same location for all of the cars - located on the left side of the car, somewhat underneath the engine. The fuel pump is located in the top of the tank, and pumps fuel out the top as well. N Reg 1995 BMW 316I. Suspected fuel pump problem

Not a problem, the fuel pump is in the rear passenger side (under the back seat) pop out the seat held by too clips onto the the rear seat, take out the sound deadining pad, undo the big black cover and get water pump pliers too undo the white cover lift out the pump, you should check the fuel gauge to see how much fuel is in the tank, no need to drain as long as you dont want petrol on your hands.
When you take the pump out, the most common problem is the thin Brown wire snaps off the sender unit, it buzzes but wont start. It should be around £30 for a good second hand pump.

I hope this helps.

Banging noise from rear of bmw 316 e36

It could be your subframe as well big problem with E36's. Also you can check your Rear Shock Mounts in the trunk by removing the carpet, they are under the speakers. Also check your brake pads, the little shim could have fallen off causing your brake pad to rattle over bumps. And check all your heat shields.
