No idea i am a europeon mechanic whos never seen this car except on the TV perhaps so please try a direct question to emmisionwiz as hes a american ford dealer mechanic and will know what to look for all i can suggest is to follow your nose and and have a good look as it may be just a loose clamp on the cable or if your unlucky its a outer cable sheaf come adrtift from a connection on the end of the cable so the clamp is holding the end but the outer sheaf is adrift anything more i wouldnt know without my head under the bonnet and kicking it up the exhaust pipe

SOURCE: Automatic Gear Shifter Light Burned Out

hi.t thing to do firstly is check your fuses under bonnet and then check the fuses inside the car which are mostly under the dashboard and are easy to get to.
It could be that one of your other fuses has blown and caused this to short circuit.
Check all the fuses throughout and if they are all ok except the one that lights up the gears your in,then change that one.
It might not be that the bulb has blown at all.
If this all fails, then you will have to go through the process of taking out the centre concule which is or should only be clipped into place by self tapping screws which should just pop out with a flat ended screw driver and are easy to push back into place with your thumb.
Hope this has helped.

SOURCE: cannot get into park. gear shift seems almost loose

So why do you need park, if you have a hand brake?
Just start the car in neutral.

SOURCE: 1998 Windstar Transmission doesn't shift into gear

common problem for ford. and in these vans. Same thing to the 98 I had. I am a mechanic and couldn't figure it out. Thought pin fell out but linkage moved. Brought in to tranny shop and they ended up getting used on for $800

SOURCE: I am planning to purchase a 2003 taurus wagon with

My 97 Mountaineer did the same thing and it was 2 screws that needed tightening . Take it to a dealer BEFORE you buy it and get them to look at it to make sure that it's not anything more serious than that.

Adjust shift indicator 1999 ford ranger

it does sound like a loose transmission shifter

the shift linkage is directly below your auto transmission shifter. simply place in park, undo the bolt joining the shifter to the transmission, push on the transmission shifter at the other end so it clicks fully into park and tighten the bolt up hard. then check for normal operation.

just remember chances are when your pushing down on the shifter to drive that the direction your pushing at the transmission is reversed so park should be towards the rear of the vehicle and drive is towards the front. but may not always be the case. best bet is to get a mate to move the shifter up and down untill you see exactly what is going on, then adjust your linkage to suit.

Manual Transmission 5 speed

check the drain plug magnet for metal bits. Mostly you can remove the rear extension housing with out removing the gear box and you will find a small gear on the cluster shaft ( bottom shaft) and a larger gear on the out put shaft ( tail shaft) . Check that the shifter fork is actually moving the larger gear or gear dog into 5th gear (Fork loose on selector rail) or check that there are still teeth on the smaller gear as excessive high speed under load will rear out the teeth

My car wont shift out of 2nd gear.the shifting handle is sloppy and the clutch is working fine

if the clutch really is working, (lever at bell moves 3/4")
by fine, my guess, is you can take off from dead stop in2nd, right>?
then its a bad shifter. tip.
or linkage (end tranny extension housing)
or transmission actual core.(shift rails, or forks) or worse.
you do know ,that you can disconnect the linkage and test tranny.
by hand,
key off
leakage off
shift to neutral (read the FSM or alldata.com) for how. under M/T sections.
then key on start engine, clutch depressed, the lift pedel
car moves its stuck in 2nd, of not bad linkage.
can do all gears that way, use 2 people and do not stand infront of car doing test.
or put the front wheels up on stands. but do not get near them.
while engine is running.
btw some shifters have plastic parts that go bad in the shifter tip.

or ,
jack up car in front, can you now shift car in to neutral or any gear?
linkage tests.
remove shifter housing and below see the shifter, H pattern
sifter box mechanism.
see that. you can shift that by hand with any small wrench or
large screwdriver, if the works the parts on the end of the shifter
handle main shaft tip are bad.

Pulled into parking place. Went to put car in park. Gear shift moves up and down, but doesn't engage. Somehow moved to 2nd. Turned car off and it won't start again. Still shows that it is in 2nd. ...

First thing I would do is to check the transmission fluid. (while it is running and up to operating temp.). If that is full, then it could just be a problem with linkage. The linkage is what connects the gear shifter in the car that you move, to the actual transmission. I have seen problems similiar to yours caused by having a rock or some other object wedged in between the linkage, and or the transmission. The AWD light coming on is what really concerns me. It sounds like it was a warning, but I can't be certain. I would check the fluid level and then get under it and physically check the shifter and linkage, etc... Have someone shifting it while someone else is looking at it.

My 2000 ford focus wont shift. Its not the transmission because I can shift it manually a the transmission. Could this be the linkage?

I think your shifter cable broke go back to the linkage at the trans and find the bracket the cable attaches to and try to pull the cable through if you can it broke that's why I think the shifter lever is now all over the place also go to the bottom off the steering column it may have just come loose at the bracket inside the car good luck Adam you'll find it Stephen

1991 Honda Civic DX Why am I able to push the car with automatic transmission while it's in park? The car won't start and run, either.

If the car rolls with the shifter in the park position and the starter will not engage the engine than the transmission is not in park. This could be caused by a bad shift cable. In order to confirm this you will need to find the area where the shift cable attaches to the transmission. While a helper runs the shifter through the gears check the linkage at the transmission to see if it is moving. If the linkage is not moving that there is a problem with the shift cable or the shifter. Some disassembly of the center council may be necessary to gain access to the area where the shift cable attaches to the shifter to see if it is still attached to the shifter. If it is and the shifter is moving the cable than the cable will need to be replaced. If the cable is moving the linkage at the trans than there is probably something wrong internally inside of the transmission. If you have any questions or need further help I will be happy to do what I can!

Follow your shift arm on the trans- they had a cheap nylon snap socket to hold them on

My chevy aveo won't go into gear. The gear shift says you are in Drive but the car acts as if it is in park

Most likely the shifter cable broke or became disconnected. Have someone shift the car (engine off, parking brake on) while someone else watches the transmisssion linkage to see if it moves. If it does move there is an internal transmission problem if it doesn't it is just a problem with the cable.

Manual transmission shifter will not engage

Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.
