I have lots of fire and gas but it will not start,

Did you pull a spark plug placing it against the block while cranking the engine over and see the spark ? or "fire" as you call it. Theres a number of things that could be wrong, first is the engine cranking over fast enough ? you say you had too boost it if the engine cranks too slow it won't start. Another thing you can check is if you have the digi 2 fuel intake (I've had this problem before) they were know to flood themself if you held the key to start too short, if this is the case simply unplug the fuel rail connector on the far end of the transmission side of the engine keep cranking the engine if its flooded it will start (hood the gas pedal too the floor while cranking and fuel rail unplugged) once it fires let off pedal and its always easier to have some one ready to plug that connector back on as soon as the engine fires before it runs out of fuel then your back to square one. The only other thing (worse case) is when the person crossed the battery while boosting it you may have fried your ECM, its located on the left side of the car under the windshield you have to get at it from the outside by removing the black trim peace that is under the hood where your wiper arm linkage is, a small box with about 2 to 4 main wire harness connectors its held in place by four 10mm bolts. Well thats a few things you can check out hope it helps and good luck.

91 vw golf will not stay running after 15 minutes

You are losing oil pressure, this means your oil pump is probably out. Don't drive it anymore until you can get that repaired. It's shutting down because it's siezing up. You need the extra power to jump it because the piston rings and wall are sticking together, let it all cool down and the rings contract and loosens up. Allowing the engine to turn.

Fuel pressure is 30 psi

check fuel rails , hoses, and injector seals for leaks. You probably have leaky injector but I would check all these.

Glow plug light

Thats not good, if the glow plugs are being charged the whole time They will burn out quickly if not already. Even if the glow plugs are burned out the engine will still start unless your in a really cold region. Sounds like the GP (GP = glow plug) relay is fused in the open position, its located above the fuse panel refer to your owners manual to its exact location above the fuse panel. Just pull this relay out and your light should go out while engine is running. If this works simply replace the relay from your local Volkswagen dealer, but the bad news is I would highly recommend pulling the GP's out and checking to see if theres anything left of them. There not built to be on constant. Good luck Hope thats your problem just a relay.

1991 Volkswagen Golf

You didn't mention which engine you have but I'm going to guess you have the 1.8L 8V, but you can refer to your "Emissions Control" label in the engine compartment for exact timing specs. You will need a timing gun to get it right on,by marking the timing mark on the fly wheel you will need a 27mm hex end tool to remove the plastic timing cap on the transmission to expose the timing mark on the flywheel (unless it is already gone like most old vdubs). There is alot of variables depending on which engine you have I recommend picking up a "Haynes" VW repair manual it has all the info for setting timing correctly. If your vdub doesn't have the Emissions Label just call up any Volkswagen dealer give them your car info and they can give you the degrees of timing. Good Luck

1987 Volkswagen Golf - speedometer problem

Well I would verify the trany speed gear is "ate up" first, theres only one 10mm bolt that holds it in place, sure the area around the speedo cable is very CLEAN before removing it any dirt in there would make things bad to say the least. If you pull the cable out the gear is attached to the cable if it looks good then put it back together and remove your cluster (speedo and other gauges inside) I suggest you pick up a repair manual at a big auto store on MK1-MK2 vdubs (82-92) to explain how to remove speedo cable from back of cluster its kinda of tricky getting your fingers back there and pressing it together to get it to release. Once out drive the car and see if that cable is turning from the inside if it is then its your speedo gauge that is faulty. Grab a cluster from a scrap yard, if that cable is NOT turning then the gearing inside the trany is messed up which would mean taking the trany apart to repair it. If that was the case you would be cheaper to replace the whole trany with a used one. Good luck

91 golf timing belt broke while driving on highway.

Well if your engine is a 1.8L 8V or a 1.6L diesel your ok there is enough room for the valves to clear the pistons from a timing belt break. If for some reason you swapped out the OEM engine for a VR6 or a 16V GTI you may have a problem I'm not 100% sure on those two engines but anything with dual cams usually has leass clearance. If your doing the timing belt I recommend you change the crank seal since you have to take the outter pulley off anyways and the only other thing is to make sure the idler pulley is in good condition, I've had one seize up on me in a 1.8L and it wasn't fun watching the timing belt smoke as I tried to get it home.
