Vw golf 1 timing

This engine is fully electronically controlled, you must do a fault code test, once you have the fault codes you do the required fault codes testing per the factory service manual and replace or repair the problem(s) that caused the loss of spark.

What can cause the engine to sputter and seem to want to diw out.

Blocked injector jets or fuel line, could be restricted by sediment from fuel tank (this often happens when you let fuel run low, it sucks up minute dirt settled on tank floor)....check oil for white gunk around inside of cap (water in oil) ..... make sure all HT leads are good and earth connections sound... Red.

Where is the fusebox

lower left near above the hood release. Some of those Golfs had a "knee bar" that makes the fuse panel a little harder to see or reach under the dashboard.

My fuel pump is not getting power, I've changed

The fuel relay and inertia switch could be two different items. The inertia switch kills power to the pump. If there is a relay in between the inertia switch and the pump, then it would mean the inertia switch was tripped by slamming a door or an impact. Check your owners manual for the inertia switch. This website advertises online service manual reference.

Engine has light failure on minimum rpm when

better get a new battery soon. You are close to being stranded. Dim lights also indicate the alternator is getting tired. A new battery might fix alternator output but if batter isn't getting recharged, replace alternator too.

1991 1.8L VW Golf, I

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
Regarding the coolant loss, I suspect that the coolant in the reservoir is above maximum. If it's above the maximum level the coolant will overflow, so it must be on the max level or a little lower.
Regarding the sludge on the oil cap and wet spark plug, it's not normal. The valve seals of the engine can be worn out that's why there's oil marks. If that's the case the valve seals must be replaced to resolve the issue.
Please do try cleaning the oil cap as well and observe if it will build up sludge again. It can be just dirt underneath the oil cap.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
