If you haven't already...I'd try new batteries and use good ones like Energizer Lithiums. Some electronic devices are sensitive to lower battery voltages.

What information is given in the manual ? BTW, AFAIK, 2gb SD cards and 2gb SDHC cards are not interchangeable - do you have the correct one ?

You have to measure the trigger voltage on the pins of the flash with a voltmeter to make sure it is at 8 volts. If it is higher, you will fry the Nikon. Use the center pin and the one at the edge of the shoe to measure the voltage.

You can try formatting it as a fat 32 card with a computer.

Use the warranty to get the camera repaired or replaced. Usually, you can take the camera back to the store you got it from within the first 10 days after purchase, but not always. Contact Vivitar support to get a warranty claim started.

On the side of the SD card, there is a very small lever that locks the card. The label on the card will indicate the position of the lever to place it in the unlocked position.

If there is a D after the 2800 you're probably safe. The trigger voltage is 8 volts so to be sure, find out what the upper limit of trigger voltage the camera can safely handle. If there is no D designation in the model number it will definitely fry the Nikon

If it's a 2800D then it's probably safe. If it does not have a D after 2800, then measure the trigger voltage on the flash contacts with a voltmeter. If it's above 8 volts it will fry the camera. It's not TTL so it doesn't communicate with the camera. You'll have to shoot Aperture priority to get proper exposures

You should be able to format the card in the camera. 8 gig may be too large for the camera.
