That depends entirely upon the type of soil or the substrate you are measuring through and as such, there is no answer for all situations.
The best method is to use trial and error for a happy medium.
Some have a thermal cut out which will reset and some have a thermal fuse which doesn't reset. You may have burned out the motor. The only way to diagnose is to open it up and use a digital multimeter to test the internal components.

Check the chamber probe. The resistance value must be about 1100 Ohm at 25°C. The probe is connected to the terminals 44 and 45 of the power PCB.

Flick the edge of the vinyl and it will separate. On any scrap vinyl you can stretch it until the backing tears.

Remove the case, get out your digital multimeter and test everything from where the power enters. There really isn't much to them and there are some spares available.
