My boat motor Johnson 90 hp will not rev up throttle is wide open have checked coils fuel pump new spark plugs. all good boat sank a few years back. before that ran great.it is a 1986 unit

it sank..ooopppsss...sounds like trouble.. First thing I would do is check the compression with a gauge... This will require a GREAT friend.. remove all the spark plugs - makes PULLING the engine over easier.. get a compression gauge (or take it to a competent professional to get the compression checked!). Install the compression gauge... Put the throttle wide open... have your buddy yank with ALL his heart about 6-8 times..it should show about 115psi+ minimum..all 3 cylinders should be with 10+-psi. If they are not at these specs minimum..you have found the issue..then try putting a little outboard oil into all three cylinders and repeat the test.. if the PSI goes way up.. you have found the issue.

Batteries 1 and 2 will charge fully, but battery 3 will not fully charge

By reading this.. I am assuming #3 is the crank battery.... Try this.. (from experience) remove all wires (or big terminals) from the battery and see how that works.. I have a 3 bank and use a stand alone charger!! Works BETTER!!!

Wiring diagram for a minn kota mk220 2 bank charger

First. the +/positive/hot wires go to the respective/separate +positive/hot side battery terminals.. and the -/negative/ground wire go to their respective/separate -/negative/ground battery terminals. The wires from the charger are "paired out".. meaning the + and - pair must go to the same battery. .. you can't mix and match.

I have a 1992 70hp Johnson boat motor and I;m getting no fire to the starter, how do I trace the problem?

Make sure your battery is GOOD and holding 12+ volts! ..You have a hot wire from the battery to the solenoid. You should have 12v at that terminal. Use a multimeter - set to 12+dc volts and check the voltage.. + on the solenoid terminal and (-) negative to ground. If you are getting 12volts to the solenoid, and its not starting.. you need to check for a bad solenoid. BE CAREFUL.. SPARKS WILL FLY WHEN YOU JUMP A SOLENOID... GAS OR GAS FUMES WILL EXPLODE!! You need to "jump" the solenoid,, you can use a decent side srcew driver to connect the two large threaded studs(terminals) on the solenoid. when you connect them (sparks will fly - be careful - have a fire extinguisher handy). the motor should turn over! If it does turn over - get a new solenoid, if it does NOt turn over you need to trace voltage back to the battery.. A bad battery could show 12 volts and ALMOST ZERO amperage.. not enough to even make the engine do anything... Do all this and repost.

My outboard motor locks up, then I turn it backward by hand and it runs until it locks up again. can't find what is wrong with it

OUCH... ok.. do not try to start it again.. you can and will cause more damage! Is it in gear when you are turning it backwards or trying to make it run? (need to eliminate drive line issues) How long with it run after you turn it backwards? ..will it actually run or just turn over? (turning an outboard backwards will damage the water pump impeller!!)..its something you need in perfect working order! Remove the spark plugs.. see if there is anything on them except a little carbon....We are checking for damage to the piston/rings area. If there is anything on them but a little carbon, you have found the problem area... If they plugs are clean, (and NOT new).. then you need to check further..You will need a GOOD mechanic to help you.. I would pull the flywheel to make sure you don't have any broken magnets/stator damage. If the issue is NOT in the lower unit...then its in the power head. Take it to a professional mechanic. Repost/reply with more info on what you have done.
