Hi folks! My housemate's over-the-range microwave

Id check the high voltage connectors on the magnitron. Look for any black scorching... Pull them off, clean them and plug them back in. There are only two wires, so ~ it wont take all day to do it.
Obviously on a discharged microwave and unplugged (stating the obvious)....

GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Exhaust Fan Whines & Doesn't Do a Good Job

The vent fan assembly's blade assembly may be freewheeling on the motor shaft (which can be fixed with a couple of drops of super glue or epoxy) or there may be a foreign object or critter in the fan blades. You will have to remove the oven from the wall to inspect and remove and inspect the vent motor. You can download the installation instructions here. At my Web site, you can get details, plus I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes. I have a GE Profile

I regularly see (and repair) this light and / or fan failure on model JVM1660SB005 and most any model of over the range microwave. The problem is on the controller assembly, which I regularly repair very affordably. At my Web site, you can get details, plus I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes. This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller. The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too. For more free DIY and other help & advice, feel free to contact me via my site. GE Spacemaker microwave, runs only 2 seconds, then stops

The problem you describe on your JVM1650SH02 is a failing "noisy" magnetron which is emitting electrical interference that disrupts your microprocessor. At my Web site, I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range grille and control panel assembly in under 5 minutes. You will find a technical sheet hidden behind the grille or behind the controls. It's handy for locating parts and troubleshooting. You can find an exploded view and parts list by entering your full model number from the tag here, and you can also order parts there. On your model, you may need to remove the oven from the wall. The installation instructions here will be helpful. Pro tip: In many GE models, dropping the floor plate that holds the high voltage transformer is necessary to get the magnetron in and out. Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screw(s) you need to remove. Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done. In some cases, you then have to gently rotate the handle to unlock it. You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here. The lights on the bottom of my microwave will not turn off. This started when I changed the bulbs due to the old ones burning out. Anyone ever heard of this? Thank you.

If you put in higher wattage bulbs than designed, your bulbs may have caused the control device (relay contacts/triac/diac) to permanently fail thus allowing the circuit to always remain energized.

How can I check the diode?

It normally is not possible to check the diode of a Microwave oven without some special high voltage testing equipment. If you suspect it, replacing it would be much cheaper. A typical DVM will not do the job. But diodes usually are not the first part to fail; check the transformer.

Ge spacemaker II microwave started humming and nothing showing on monitor

My parents have had a couple of the spacemaker microwaves mounted over the range with the built-in vent. Over time, the seal on the control board gets a crack in it and the steam from cooking below it gets up into the control board and does it in. Even if yours isn't mounted over the range, it sounds like a main control board failure.
