Hi, I have a GE Spacemaker II microwave Serial #JEM31SF Manufactured April 2004 . It stopped heating, though when turned on turn table still spins, light comes on and it "acts" like it's working. I stopped using it last fall and am just getting around to finding out whether it's worth trying to fix. So I turned it on today to see if it would heat a ceramic cup of water and no it of course still does not heat, and now it also makes a buzzing sound and started to smell like burning plastic after a couple of minutes. (No, no plastic inside the microwave). Is it worth my trying to fix it, get a repair man in or time to buy a new one? Thanks so much for your help.

It sounds like possibly your transformer has failed or it could be an internal ground failure from your transformer to the magnetron.

It can most likely be repaired but needs done by a trained technician. If it were to be diagnosed with what I state could be wrong you would be ahead to get a new unit as opposed to paying for parts and labor to repair.

If you smell something burning in it do not run it any more, you could start a fire. I would also kill the power to it via unplugging, breaker, etc.

Countetop microwave ovens are almost non-repairable now, as they are inexpensive to buy, and can be just as costly to fix. If it smelled, it's not a cheap fix. I'd recommend buying a replacement.
