I have a sony Vaio VGN-FE38GP, the graphics card has died. I have googled a bit and understand that graphics card is embedded into motherboard. So should I change the motherboard? What motherboard is used?

From the looks of things after searching Google, it looks like Sony has admitted that there is a factory issue with that laptop and that video board. Contact Sony for a factory repair.

You can buy one online, just google recovery disc.
You may get one from a file sharing site (limewire/isohunt) but this can be risky, you never know if the file you download has been altered.

Hi tahseen_huss. If you are sure it's the graphics card and not the monitor. It could be expensive to replase because it's on the motherboard and you can't replace it. You will need to replace the whole motherboard. Prices could range from $350 to $600 just parts, you will need to add the labor. So it's up to you. The actual model is "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900". The chip uses up to ~128 MB of Memory/RAM for graphics.

1-Try installing graphic-cards driver from the vendors home site!
2-Install a Codec pack like k-lite
3-use VLC-player
4-If yor graphics use shared memory , it could be a result of memory module failure.

Visit the sony Vaio website - chances are you need to upgrade a driver, or download a patch for use with Vista. FYI: This is something you should get used to looking for. EVERYTHING needs SOMETHING to work with Vista....
