check and clean the brush bearings located on each end most reasons that belts break is the brushes are binding from debris --others bad belt or old and dried out
The Dyson DC 17 has a rug / floor switch on the head of the vacuum. Please check to make sure the switch is in the Rug position. You sound like you've broken your belt! If the roller gets stuck the pulley that rotates the belt will have burnt a hole in your belt and broken it. You'll need to contact your local Dyson to obtain parts,
Remove the glide plate at the bottom of rhe machine. Remove brush and broken belt. Fit new belt and re install brush. Fit glide plate, job done. Its in the instruction book
