I know this sounds silly, but it works. Turn it over and wipe all the black residue off the bottom of it (off the plastic on the bottom that rubs on the carpet as you push and pull it). I thought my husband was out of his mind when he told me that was the solution, but it really works.

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14. If the canister won't reattach to the vacuum, you might want to check you have it assembled correctly - you can find out how to do this in the user guide supplied with your cleaner. In case you don't have this to hand, here's an online copy:

Have you replaced the post motor filter? It could be time to do that.
Perhaps your cyclones are clogged as well. You can find steps to disassemble and clean your cyclone, pretty easy actually. Only 6 parts inside there and they only go together one way so you can't screw it up. Search google for dc14 cyclone disassembly and you'll probably find the video. I just did my DC17 and it took about an hour total to take apart, clean and then reassemble. You can also take the opportunity to wash all the parts and disinfect with a mild water bleach solution. That'll help with the smell.
I am betting though that your post motor and premotor filters are the blame for the smell.
I bought my DC 17 from some lady who used it to clean her cat's litter boxes. Cyclones were totally clogged after only 6 months. What do you expect from poop and wet kitty litter. She said it was junk and bought a $1500 Kirby in it's place. She's gonna have some new and interesting smells with that machine sucking up wet kitty litter.

Although this site doesnt actually cover the DC14 yet, the DC14 is very similar to the DC07 so as regards dissassembling the machine, and replacing the clutch, my experience is that the DC07 info will enable you to do the job.

On mine, it was the two little wheels on the outer back portion of the vacuum head. Where the red tabs lock in to hold the brush cover in place.

Does my dc14 have a brushbar control?..there is nothing I can see that I can do?..it won't hoover my new long pile rug?...please help

There's a spring in the switch to give it "snap action" on or off. The spring may be broken or out of place. They are not repairable, need new one.

You will need to follow the power down to the motor and insure it is getting full voltage. If so you , may need a new motor. Be sure to check the common wires too. If you have a bad spot in any of the common wires the motor will not run.

I'm not sure what you mean by recline and vacuum positions. Normally when the handle is in the upright position to use the tools and hose the brush roll does not turn. When you recline the handle into the floor vacuuming position the brush spins. If you were able to remove the brushroll an reinstall it the brush roll belt is likely very stretched out because otherwise it is very difficult to put the bush roll back in with out using the belt change tool. This can cause the brushroll to spin but stop spinning when when it hits the carpet because he belt is too loose. Belts must be very tight to spin the brush roll in he carpet. There is also another belt that you can't see under the clutch cover. It becomes stretched out also. The belts need to be replace every few years as do any stretch belts. The hard part about changing belts on your model is they are inside the clutch, it's easier to replace the whole clutch. Check the belts, it sound like you have a broken belt or a belt you didn't not reconnect

Often times when people bring a vac in for repairs and say it has no suction at the floor it has good suction but not good agitation. Make sure the belts in the clutch are new (some people are selling used clutches with stretched out belts) and the brush roll is good. If the agitation from the brush roll is not good it will not pick up even light soils like hair and lint.

It sounds like the same problem I was having. I had loss of suction through he hose then all of the air was coming out through the vent/valve on top of canister. If you are looking at your dyson from the back, look at the bottom. You will see a purple plastic tab on the bottom left. That allows you to remove the plastic u-shaped hose that goes from the hose to the bottom of the dyson. I just removed that and found it was completley blocked. I removed it and the dyson has no loss of suction orair through top valve/vent. I hope this helps. I never post but i'm just excited that I got my dyson working perfectly again.

Check to make sure the wands and tubes are all put back on properly.

You may need a new brush roll and clutch

your clutch has failed 29 for new clutch, your local vac shop will charge 49 all in for service and wash and new clutch

most any vacuum repair shop will be able to remove the obstruction causing the problem

It probably needs to be cleaned but, no that is not your problem. You have a clog somewhere most likely. You should take it to your local vac shop to have it serviced and cleaned
