Black boxes in the middle of the screen are text boxes. Text is a part of the closed captioning feature either on your television or your cable/set top box. You would press the closed captioning button on the remote repeatedly until it displays cc off or something similar. Captioning might also be active on your cable box/set top box. There is normally a hidden menu on the cable box and that is where closed captioning is. You have to turn the cable box off. Yes I did say turn the cable box off. Then press the menu button on it and then the hidden menu will pop up. Then navigate to closed captioning and choose disable.

Did you try the closed caption button? What you are describing is a form of cc.

After reading other postings, we figured out that it was the caption box, went to menu and turned it off.

Sounds like a closed caption box or a pip box, if not try all the buttons on the remote one by one and lastly try to reset to factory settings if the option is present in menu settings.

SOURCE: black box shows up in the middle of the tv screen

Sounds like closed caption text is turned on. Go to closed caption menu and shut off. Box should disappear.

Black box in middle of screen

If you have a menu button on the front of your tv go into the closed caption portion and turn off the text mode . This will get your picture back . If you don't have a menu button on the front of your tv you will need a remote that can access the menu . Good luck
