Whenever I turn on my Dyson the beater bar makes this horrible clunking noise. I've cleaned it, opened it up, there is nothing in there bouncing around to make that noise. It actually sounds like the bar is loose and vibrating when I turn it on. Is there something I can do to fix this? Has anyone else had this problem? Nothing on it looks broken but the beater bar does not seem secure or something.
I just came from the repair shop. There is a recurring problem with a bearing coming out. Repair guy turned it on & said that loud noise is a symptom of that exact problem. This is a warranty item, as is the belt & on/off switch. Dyson comes with a 5 year warranty, so call their 800 number to get the name & address of an authorized repair shop.
This happened to me. In my case, the steel tension roller came off and fell out of the DC17. It was only two months old and the store (Lowes) replaced the vacuum under their 90 day return policy.

beater bar makes rachet like noises when turning
The belt is probably stretched due to things like rugs, shoe strings, throw blankets, and other items being caught around the roller brush. My Dyson DC17 did the same thing and the noise was horrendous.
Then as I was vacuuming last Sunday, the belt broke entirely. I ordered a new belt (and roller brush because the newer belts are a wee bit WIDER) and they just came in today.
I re-installed the new brush and belt and everything works like a charm. No more noise. Yay. I've fallen back in love with my Dyson.
PS I purchased the items at: buyitnow.com
I am on my way to the store for a third dyson in 6months time I have the total clean and this is the second time the roller just will not turn?? I have done everything to this one and the last one..
