If you don't have the CD that came with the motherboard to get the drivers from for your operating system you will need to go to the MSI website and download the correct drivers.

Specs on this cpu process

MicroStar International (Inc) Support > 865PE Neo2-P Platinum Edition (MSI MS-6728) Main Support page,

http://www.msi.com/product/mb/865PE-Neo2-P-Platinum-Edition.html

Click on Specification
(Overview / Specification / Download / Support / etc)

CPU (Processor) Support;

1) Intel Pentium 4 processors that have;

A) Use a Socket 478 processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_478

B) Northwood Core, or Prescott Core

C) Front Side Bus (FSB) of 400MegaHertz (400MHz) for Intel Pentium 4 processors that are based on the Northwood Core.

D) FSB support of either 533MHz, or 800MHz, for Intel Pentium 4 processors based on the Prescott Core.

Processors that have an 800MHz FSB can be used, that have UP TO a 3.6GHz frequency rate. ('Speed')
Indication that higher 'speeds' can be supported. (Overclocking?)

Now let's look at Intel Pentium 4 processors, that are based on the Northwood Core, and fit a Socket 478 processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors#Northwood_.28130.C2.A0nm.29

(Front Side Bus = FSB
The M/Ts listing means MegaTransfers per Second.
Believed to be a more accurate method of stating the FSB, than MHz.

MegaHertz
Mega = 1 Million
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second. Was named after a man with the last name Hertz.
Example; 400MHz = 400 Million Cycles per Second )

Intel Pentium 4 processors based on the Prescott Core, and utilizing the Socket 478 processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors#Prescott_.2890.C2.A0nm.29_2

sSpec Number will be on the processor, as well as the Part Number.

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_4/index.html

Scroll down for photos.

CPU support can be attested to looking at the specs for the motherboard chipset, on your motherboard.

The motherboard chipset is an Intel 865PE chipset.
Intel 82865PE northbridge chip, and an Intel ICH5 southbridge chip.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_chipsets

Scroll down to 865PE in the left column.

The part number on the Intel ICH5 southbridge chip, is Intel 82801EB,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Southbridge_8xx_chipsets

The Northbridge chip of the motherboard chipset, handles the Faster capabilities of a computer.
Processor (CPU), Ram Memory, and HIGH-speed graphics.

HIGH-speed graphics is the AGP technology, or PCI Express technology.

Using a graphics card in a PCI slot, or using Integrated Graphics; is NOT high-speed graphics,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

The Slower capabilities of a computer are handled by the Southbridge chip.

If this is a question of what CPU is on your motherboard at present, and the motherboard is in a working computer, suggest use the free tiny program CPU-Z from CPUID.com,

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Need to know how to download, install, and use CPU-Z, post back in a Comment.

Want to upgraded Pentium 4 2.8 GHz to Pentium 4 3.2E GHz

why not go with a faster MB and CPU combo?
First to awnser your question yes the Pentuim 3.2 will fit the MB as long as yours is a 800 Mhz Bus speed. And the Board can be configured for the proper clock speed. I would also buy a new CPU fan and heatsink greese b4 you install this CPU. Thee are so many cheap CPU MB Combos out there its almost cheaper to just replace both and get a much faster system.

Installing sound drivers

First, visit this website:

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/gc/gc_drive.htm

Next up select Windows XP Professional as your operating system. Now click, "Drivers." The first result should be the Realtek drivers, which are what you're searching for. Download them. Once they finished downloading open the file and the drivers should be installed automatically.

If there's anything else I can help you with, let me know. If this solution solved your problem, please rate the solution.

Changing a cpu on a compaq 5000T/REM

Hello,
I've located this description when installing the pentium 4 processor on Windows XP. If you have not performed these steps this may be the cause of what you are experiencing. To save you time I've pasted the section below--> Operating System Support
Nearly all modern operating systems designed for the Intel Architecture have support for the Pentium 4 processor, although some may require specific versions or processor support files. Many Microsoft operating systems like Windows* 98 SE, Windows NT* 4 with Service Pack 5, Windows* 2000, Windows* ME, and Windows* XP support the Pentium 4 processor. Linux* distributions based on the Linux* 2.4 core support the processor. Also, many other vendors have support for the Pentium 4 Processor in their operating systems. System integrators should verify that the operating system they have selected supports the Pentium 4 processor.

Note: Windows XP or certain versions of Linux are required for Hyper-Threading Technology2 support for the Pentium 4 processor. For additional information on integrating systems based on the Pentium 4 processor supporting Hyper-Threading Technology, refer to the Integration Overview for Systems Based on the Intel Pentium 4 Processor Supporting Hyper-Threading Technology.

All operating systems that support the SSE instructions that were first introduced with the Intel® Pentium III processor will also support the SSE2 instructions introduced with the Pentium 4 processor. To experience the power of the SSE2 instructions, it is critical that system integrators install drivers and software that have been optimized for the Pentium 4 processor's SSE2 instructions. For example, for maximum system performance, system integrators using Microsoft operating systems that support DirectX* should load DirectX 8 (or higher).

Software Optimization
With specific drivers that use the SSE2 instructions, graphics accelerators, audio hardware and software, and other system resources can experience substantial performance gain. It is critical that systems also use APIs that use SSE2 instructions to achieve maximum performance. Two examples are Microsoft's DirectX 8 (or higher) and Open GL 1.2 (or higher). Most major graphics accelerator vendors have optimized drivers that use the SSE2 instructions. Graphics card vendors typically highlight support changes with new driver releases. Download and install the latest drivers (dated later than October 2000) from the vendor's Web site. Also, verify that the driver version contains optimization for the Pentium 4 processor.

Many applications also use the SSE2 instructions to experience the breakthrough performance of the Pentium 4 processor. System integrators should contact software vendors to verify support and determine version information.

System performance is greatly affected by proper operating system and driver installation processes. For example, it is important to install the latest Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility immediately after installing most Microsoft operating systems to ensure proper drivers for the chipset are installed prior to installation of other drivers. System integrators should confirm boxed Intel Pentium 4 processor-based systems are optimally configured and integrated.

Conclusion
Boxed Intel Pentium 4 processor-based systems require proper integration. System integrators that follow the guidelines in this document will experience higher customer satisfaction by providing higher quality systems.

Please let me know if you have success with this.
Thank You, Raph30

The Only CPU's that board supports are:

  • Supports 90nm LGA775 processor package
  • Supports Intel Pentium Processor Extreme Edition
  • Supports Intel Pentium D Smithfield processors
  • Supports Intel Pentium 4 / Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors
  • Intel Hyper-Threading Technology ready

  • So sadly no I am sorry. However it does Support a P4 with HT which is still a very nice CPU
