If you mean that when the recorder is paused during recording or playback, then it shuts down after being left awhile. Then I'm afraid the asnswer must be no.
The reason is because it's the recorder protecting itself and the tape from risk of damage. As when the tape is laced up, the head spinning at high speed can cause static electricity, plus the general risk that the tape might get entangled. The timer is all part of the micro controller in any case, which is the "brains" of the VCR.
However if the VCR is shutting itself eratic, then there's some kind of fault.
